1. Proof that, in the '50s a drag queen could be a TV star. |

2. When I was a little girl in Germany, I watched Lassie in translation on TV. |

That was all I knew of America, the images which came via Lassie, Bonanza and Mr. Ed. To me, as a child, that was what America was all about. The good always won in the end. America was where I wanted to be. To me, these glimpses of American life were a look at paradise.
My own country was still digging out of its self-inflicted destruction. What did I know of hatred, injustice, discrimination as a little girl? All I somehow managed to gather was that it was our own damn fault. But how? Why? I couldn't wrap my child's mind around it.
At the same time, I was just a little too young to watch "On the Waterfront" or "In the Heat of the Night", or any of the other classics, which showed a different side of the country I longed for so much.
Still, Lassie seems to forever be part of a life that many of us wish we could have had. Am I wrong? I really and truly don't know.

3. Ah! Wholesome farm scene; white folk working hard for a living |
|
married with a family; A boy and his dog; idyllic setting with a farm pond and a farm road with no traffic. About all that is missing is the fishin' pole and an apple to munch on. It was a movie lot, right?

4. In Southern California |

About 20 min from downtown LA on the freeway. If you went up on top of the hill in the background, you'd see the smog.
