Has anybody here ever broken their coccyx? |
|
I fell on my butt a few days ago and it's still hard to sit down; I had to buy a rubber donut cushion. I don't know if it's broken but if it isn't it's a good imitation. I'm wondering how long it takes for a coccyx to heal. (I love saying coccyx).

in 8th grade and went skating for the first time in my life. It took a long time for me to be able to get up and down on a chair. Once I was up or down, it wasn't too bad...it was just the getting there.
Sorry to hear you're hurting.

My foe had a good thirty pounds on me. It took a couple months before I could walk without pain.

another girl charged into me and I fell flat AND hard. I had to take some pain pills and sit on a cushion for... trying to remember.. six weeks?
it hurt.
if only I had had a prehensile tail I could have used it to carry around the cushion.

because I never sought medical treatment, but for over twenty years thereafter, I had to curl my leg under me in order to sit without pain.
(I slipped an fell on an icy sidewalk at age 13.)

Unfortunately to this day, I often have a lot of pain in my lower back, and sometimes it stiffens up horribly.
Guess that's what I get for trying to walk downstairs in 70's platform shoes.

13. Yes. It seriously is horrible. |
|
Probably one of the most painful injuries I've ever had. If it only hurts when you sit down it probably isn't broken. When I broke mine it hurt to do anything. Standing, walking, sitting, etc., was excruciating. The worst part is that there is nothing you can do about it but suffer.

19. It only hurts when I sit down. |
|
I guess I'm lucky? I bought a donut pillow. That really helps. The problem is, I can't take it everywhere, so when I can't use it, I sit on one cheek only. Actually, I alternate my cheeks. My niece broke her coccyx giving birth to her daughter. Then she had to sit down to breastfeed. (She says she'll let her daughter know all about it when she gets older-heh).

20. rollerskating, 30 years ago |
|
Edited on Fri May-07-10 09:33 AM by velvet
I was standing still minding my own business just inside the entrance to the rink and some guy charged past me. Missed me by a hair's breadth but the surprise caused me to lose my balance (never had much of a grasp of it anyway, I was a poor skater) and I sat straight DOWN. Days of agony ensued when all I could do was lie on my side in my bed and moan. I had a cat. The cat decided now was a good time to shit in my room. It hurt to yell at the cat, my feeble cries didn't deter it one bit. Agony commuted to pain after a couple of hellish and um, odorous days. Haven't been rollerskating since.
I'm sorry, I don't remember how long it took to fully heal. Not terribly long. But yes, coccyx is very satisfying to say.

while carrying a rocking chair to load onto a moving van. Then drove said moving van from the Rio Grande Valley to Oklahoma. Had to lie flat on the floor for a solid week. The pain was excruciating.
Sorry to hear about your injury. Hope yours heals better than mine did. (It's 25 years later, and it still gives me trouble from time to time.)

Was a sound like a gunshot--scared the bejeezus out of my husband, mom, aunt, and two friends who were in the room. I found it quite ironic that I decided to give birth without meds, and yet I ended up in serious pain from something entirely different--and for quite a long time, too. I would have recovered quite nicely but for that.

27. I can tell you EVERYTHING about it, including how it effects you years later... |
|
Edited on Fri May-07-10 06:06 PM by blm
If you are in excruciating pain just by laughing or coughing, then your tailbone is likely BROKEN and you need to get to the doctor and get it 'snapped back' as soon as possible. Then you need to carry a rubber donut around with you for the first month or so and be very careful as it is in the initial healing process. There is no cast. The doctor has to go up your butt to find the tip where it is broken and snap it back into place. This requires one helluva shot in the spine....not fun.
Anyway, I never forgot what the doctor told me when he discovered it - this was 39 years ago....a bruised tailbone takes about 6 months to heal, a fractured one takes about 2yrs and a broken one can take up to 7yrs. Not to mention that years later you will likely develop fiberositis in your muscles surrounding the spine, which is expected after any serious shock to the spine.
BTW...if you are of childbearing age, there is a whole other complication. Are you?

during my birth. I've basically been a pain in the ass from day one, I guess.
Two years later, it still hadn't healed. They only discovered it when she was pregnant with my sister. I don't know how long they take to heal, but it's a while.
