Greatest ANTI-drug song written?
In my opinion, the best anti-drug song ever written was the Beatles' "A Day In The Life."

Basically, it describes a guy who's life is so humdrum and boring, he buries himself in meaningless trivia, and gets stoned.

Eventually he simply dies.

66. I was also going to mention that
Then there's "Pusher Man" by Steppenwolf, which really makes the point

(Words and music by Hoyt Axton)

You know I've smoked a lot of grass
O' Lord, I've popped a lot of pills
But I never touched nothin'
That my spirit could kill
You know, I've seen a lot of people walkin' 'round
With tombstones in their eyes
But the pusher don't care
Ah, if you live or if you die

God damn, The Pusher
God damn, I say The Pusher
I said God damn, God damn The Pusher man

You know the dealer, the dealer is a man
With the love grass in his hand
Oh but the pusher is a monster
Good God, he's not a natural man
The dealer for a nickel
Lord, will sell you lots of sweet dreams
Ah, but the pusher ruin your body
Lord, he'll leave your, he'll leave your mind to scream

God damn, The Pusher
God damn, God damn the Pusher
I said God damn, God, God damn The Pusher man

Well, now if I were the president of this land
You know, I'd declare total war on The Pusher man
I'd cut him if he stands, and I'd shoot him if he'd run
Yes I'd kill him with my Bible and my razor and my gun

God damn The Pusher
Gad damn The Pusher
I said God damn, God damn The Pusher man

I truly wish that HE (and those like him) had said "No" to drugs.

At the same time, without being flippant about it, I am certainly
glad that they've been around for the rest of us.

20. One of the hippie chores I was pretty good at....
.
...was "trip guide"... helping people who were having bad trips.
.
FUNNIEST was as a medic. Smalltown Oklahoma cowboy, head filled
with all the "Reefer Madness" crap in the world, was "talked into"
taking two hits off a hash pipe.
.
Came into the Dispensary LATE at night on his own. He was FREAKING
OUT, MAN... REALLY FUCKING FREAKING OUT, MAN!!! You'da thunk he
had done THREE hits of the brown acid from Woodstock.
.
Talked him down and over (in our heads) to his favorite place in the
world. We were fishin' on a riverbank... well, not really fishin' 'though
we had our fishin' poles braced and we were READY to reel one in if
it had the bad taste to interrupt our enjoyment in watching the clouds
roll on by. We had gone to a wonderful place and were having a wonderful
time.
.
(ominous thunder from darker clouds off in the distance)
.
Wonderful 'til his fucking cowboy buddies came in all likkered up and
started fucking GRILLING him about who had "doped him" so they could
go "FIND HIM AND KILL HIM"!!!!!!!!
.
Geezo-beezo.
.
Got them out the door and started bringing him back to the riverbank
when they came back in.
.
Repeated that chain of events about three times and was starting to
really lose him.
.
Luckily, some medic buddies of MINE came in just in time and were
able to boot the cowpokes out and KEEP them out so that I could
once again do MY thing. Luckily, THEY weren't "all likkered up"...
they were just functionally shit-faced.
.
I don't think my Oklahoma cowboy pal and I ever caught a single fish.
.
Nonetheless, it turned out... eventually... to be a great trip.
.

But "Heroin" by Velvet Underground is one of the most honest.

I always think of "Hurt" by NIN, the way Johnny Cash covered it, as anti-drug, but I don't think that was it's original intent.

Glad you got out while the getting was good. They state house just voted by an overwhelming majority to allow those with a conceal carry permit to openly carry their weapons. I swear it's gonna be the wild, wild west all over again here.

I honestly don't know why the Dems in this state don't just give up the fucking pretense already.

37. supposedly the original words had to be changed to get by the censors
'I read the news today oh boy
4000 purple holes in Albert's arm
and though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill up Albert Hall.'

Not sure that that would be considered pro or anti drug?

but I'm a fairly big Beatles fan and have read extensively on them. I didn't know if some new revelation had come out that I hadn't heard of, though.

When I googled a line from the supposed original lyrics nothing came up, so I pretty much assumed the claim is bogus.

26. That Smell
Van Zant and Allen Collins wrote this for Gary Rossington, whose alcohol/drug problems were affecting the band. They had to postpone a tour because he had gotten drunk/high and crashed his new car into a tree (and a house).

Whiskey bottles and brand new cars;
Oak tree you're in my way.
There's too much coke and too much smoke
Look what's going on inside you.

CHORUS:
Ooh, ooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, ooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you.

Angel of darkness is upon you.
Stuck a needle in your arm (you, fool, you)
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose,
one more drink, fool, would drown you. (hell, yeah)

CHORUS

Now they call you prince charming.
Can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes.
Say you'll be alright come tomorrow, but
tomorrow might not be here for you. (yeah, you)

CHORUS

Aw, you, fool, you.
You stick them needles in your arm
I know I been there before.

One little problem that confronts you,
Got a monkey on your back.
Just one more fix, Lord, might do the trick.
One hell of a price for you to get your kicks. (hell, yeah)

CHORUS 2x

Oh, you, fool, you
Don't stick those needles in your arm.
You're just a fool, just a fool, just a fool.

27. Black Sabbath - Snowblind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w93Z1M2r7SA

"Snowblind"

What you get and what you see
Things that don't come easily
Feeling happy in my vein
Icicles within my brain
(cocaine)

Something blowing in my head
Winter's ice, it soon will spread
Death would freeze my very soul
Makes me happy, makes me cold

My eyes are blind but I can see
The snowflakes glisten on the tree
The sun no longer sets me free
I feel there's no place freezing me

Let the winter sun shine on
Let me feel the frost of dawn
Fill my dreams with flakes of snow
Soon I'll feel the chilling glow

Don't you think I know what I'm doing
Don't tell me that it's doing me wrong
You're the one who's really a loser
This is where I feel I belong

Crystal world with winter flowers
Turns my day to frozen hours
Lying snowblind in the sun
Will my ice age ever come?

28. Rolling Stones - Before They Make Me Run
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFJbhtmKHHM

BEFORE THEY MAKE ME RUN
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Worked in bars and sideshows along the twilight zone
Only a crowd can make you feel so alone
And it really hit home
Booze and pills and powders, you can choose your medicine
Well it's another goodbye to another good friend

After all is said and done
Gotta move while it's still fun
Let me walk before they make me run
After all is said and done
I gotta move, it's still fun
I'm gonna walk before they make me run

Watched the taillights fading, there ain't a dry eye in the house
They're laughing and singing
Started dancing and drinking as I left town
Gonna find my way to heaven, `cause I did my time in hell
I wasn't looking too good but I was feeling real well

After all is said and done
I gotta move I had my fun
Let us walk before they make me run

After all is said and done
I did alright, I had my fun
I will walk before they make me run

The police in New York City
They chased a boy right through the park
And in a case of mistaken identity
They put a bullet through his heart

Heart breakers with your forty four
I wanna tear your world apart
You heart breaker with your forty four
I wanna tear your world apart

A ten-year old girl on a street corner
Sticking needles in her arm
She died in the dirt of an alleyway
Her mother said she had no chance, no chance!
Heart breaker, heart breaker
She stuck the pins right in her heart
Heart breaker, pain maker
Stole the love right out of you heart

Heart breaker, heart breaker
You stole the love right out of my heart
Heart breaker, heart breaker
I wanna tear your world apart

Doo, doo doo doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo....

Edited on Sun May-09-10 07:43 AM by Tuesday Afternoon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX2XI_MZc3M

I hear Mariachi static on my radio
And the tubes they glow in the dark
And I'm there with her in Ensenada
And I'm here in Echo Park

Carmelita hold me tighter
I think I'm sinking down
And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Well, I'm sittin' here playing solitaire
With my pearl-handled deck
The county won't give me no more methadone
And they cut off your welfare check

Carmelita hold me tighter
I think I'm sinking down
And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Well, I pawned my Smith Corona
And I went to meet my man
He hangs out down on Alvarado Street
By the Pioneer chicken stand

Carmelita hold me tighter
I think I'm sinking down
And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Carmelita hold me tighter
I think I'm sinking down
And I'm all strung out on heroin

But lately I've been partial to "Real Thing" (think early 90's advertising slogans, it's pretty obvious):

Poor little beastie can't walk because he doesn't have any Mary Jane -- a sad portrait of an addict. Then he dies. :(

La cucaracha, la cucaracha
Ya no puede caminar
Porque no tiene, porque le falta
Marijuana que fumar.

(The cockroach, the cockroach
Now he can't go traveling
Because he doesn't have, because he lacks
Marijuana to smoke.)

Ya la murio la cucaracha
Ta la lleven a enterrar
Entre cuatro zopilotes
Y un raton de sacristan.

(The cockroach just died
And they carried him off to bury him
Among four buzzards
And the sexton's mouse.)

Anybody think that? Just once, to hear a positive LSD story. "Today, a young man on acid, realised that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves... here's Tom with the weather."

57. Couldn't find a youtube of the Fugs' song Comin' Down, or even the complete lyrics

But found this excerpt at least: (although I thought I remembered it as sounding like "bright with a feeling for death...but the point is the same, and also thought it was "ashes and screaming, ashes and moaning" )

In the song I'm a Comin' Down, they sing, "Hey grief bird, what's happening/ Ashes/ Pits of ashes/ Ashes and screams/ Eyes with a vision of torture/ Frightened with a vision of death ..."

Edited on Mon May-10-10 12:17 AM by last_texas_dem
Wish I could find a youtube link of this one, 'cause it's a lot of fun. It's on the Live at the Paramount album. Sounds more like a celebratory drug song, but the "reaper" bit in the lyrics tends to make me think otherwise...

>>>Get on board
The Reaper wants to take y'all for a ride
Get on board
The Reaper wants to take y'all for a ride
His private train is leaving
To slip you to the other side

He's got cocaine and morphine too
Lots of stuff to get y'all high
Little pink pills in a brown bag
Truckin' off across the sky

If you feel like a disaster when you wake up in the morning
Nothing but a God damn monkey wrench inside your head
Got some things to make you go faster, others make you go slower
Open your eyes, take a drop, take away the red

He's got cocaine and morphine too
Lots of stuff to get y'all high
Little pink pills in a brown bag
Truckin' off across the sky>>>

There's also a rant in the middle about "entertainment" being provided, with Jeannie C. Riley and Conway Twitty, and Miss America jumping out of a giant cake and "the boys" being invited up to lick it off of her, but I can't find those lyrics anywhere and don't feel like trying to type it out. The Guess Who were a much more unique and interesting band than they are given credit for being, IMHO.

64. Sarah McLachlan:

Spend all your time waiting for that second chance
For the break that will make it OK
There's always some reason to feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction or a beautiful release
Memories seep from my veins
Let me be empty and weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of the Angel far away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight line, and everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
The storm keeps on twisting, you keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack
It don't make no difference, escaping one last time
It's easier to believe
In this sweet madness, oh this glorious sadness
That brings me to my knees

In the arms of the Angel far away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
In the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here

You're in the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here

Ringo:

A lady that i know just came from columbia,
She smiled because i did not understand.
Then she held out some marijuana, ha ha!
She said it was the best in all the land.

And i said,
"no, no, no, no, i don't smoke it no more,
I'm tired of waking up on the floor.
No, thank you, please, it only makes me sneeze,
And then it makes it hard to find the door."

(ah-ah-aye-aye)

A woman that i know just came from majorca, spain,
She smiled because i did not understand. (parazzi! Parazzi!) (ole!)
Then she held out a ten pound bag of cocaine,
She said it was the finest in the land.

And i said,
"no, no, no, no, i don't sniff it no more,
I'm tired of waking up on the floor.
No, thank you, please, it only makes me sneeze,
And then it makes it hard to find the door."

(aye-aye-aye-aye)

A man that i know just came from nashville, tennessee, oo, (oh no!)
He smiled because i did not understand.
Then he held out some moonshine whiskey, oh ho,
He said it was the best in all the land. (and he wasn't joking!!!)

And i said,
"no, no, no, no, i don't drink it no more,
I'm tired of waking up on the floor.
No, thank you, please, it only makes me sneeze,
And then it makes it hard to find the door."

Well, i said,
"no, no, no, no, i can't take it no more,
I'm tired of waking up on the floor.
No, thank you, please, it only makes me sneeze,
And then it makes it hard to find the door."

72. I read where Lennon or McCartney said
they wanted the last song to be sort of a cold slap of reality after all the more fanciful stuff on Sgt. Pepper.

But I've never thought of it as an anti-drug song.

That's an interesting take on it.

Edited on Mon May-10-10 11:32 AM by SteppingRazor
are the first two that sprung to my mind.

On edit: Two lesser-known ones:
"The Living Dead" by The London Suede and "Down in Mexico" by Justin Jones. I'll include lyrics from these two for those who aren't familiar. They're both pretty harrowing.

"Down in Mexico"
Rose is sleeping in the park now
When I see her I cry
She used to have the world in her hands,
Now all she’s got is high

Rose is watching all her teeth fall out
I guess you could say she lost her smile
I did all I could to get her out,
Now watching her die

Oh, I remember, Mexico, we sailed our ship, did a lot of blow
I stayed up, till the morning light, I got fucked up, I got into some fights
I knew, I looked in her eyes, it was over, she cried
I don’t love you no more
I don’t need you no more
Hell I wont be, knocking down your door
She lied, she lied, she tried.

Rose left me on a Monday night
Said she’d had all she could stand
I told her she should get some help
Said she just needs another gram

As she dug into a deeper hole,
Man you could see her sinkin' down
The stars left the sky for her eyes
Held on till she drowned

Oh, I remember, Mexico, we sailed our ship, did a lot of blow
I stayed up, till the morning light, I got fucked up, I got into some fights
I knew, I looked in her eyes, it was over, she cried
I don’t love you no more
I don’t need you no more
Hell I wont be, knocking down your door
Tonight, tonight, tonight, I just walked by.

"The Living Dead"
Where's all the money gone?
I'm talking to you
All up the hole in your arm
Is the needle a much better screw?
But oh what will you do alone?
'Cause I have to go.

Where is this life of fun that you promised me?
Nothing here works but your works and I mean it
I have to leave
But oh what will you do alone?
'Cause I have to go.

If I was the wife of an acrobat would I look like the living dead boy?
You're on the wire and can't get back, let's talk about the living dead
Could have had it all, could have had it all,
Could have walked in the sky but the sky wouldn't fall.

I know where the money's gone
I know what you do
'Cause I've seen the hole in your arm and
The needle's a much better screw
But oh, what will you do alone?
'Cause I have to go.

I would have posted to this thread earlier but I

found my way upstairs and had a smoke, somebody spoke and I went into a dream....

Aah...aahaahahh...aaaaahhhaahhhaaahhhh

I'd love to turn you on.

The car crash in the song is not drug related. There are no warnings about over-indulgence and thankfully none of the "I've done this but don't you do it" crap that gets put across these days.

80. Tom Lehrer - the Old Dope Peddler

You are no doubt familiar with songs about the old lamplighter and the old umbrella man and the old garbage collector and all these lovable old characters who go around spreading sweetness and light to their respective communities. But, it's always seemed to me that there is one member of this happy band who does an equally splendid job, but who has never been properly recognized in song or story, and this is an attempt to remedy, at least in part, that deplorable situation.

When the shades of night are falling,
Comes a fellow ev'ryone knows,
It's the old dope peddler,
Spreading joy wherever he goes.
Ev'ry evening you will find him,
Around our neighborhood.
It's the old dope peddler
Doing well by doing good.

He gives the kids free samples,
Because he knows full well
That today's young innocent faces
Will be tomorrow's clientele.
Here's a cure for all your troubles,
Here's an end to all distress.
It's the old dope peddler
With his powdered ha-happiness.

Here Comes Your 19th Nervous Breakdown (more about mental illness than drugs)
(Jagger/Richards)

You're the kind of person
You meet at certain dismal dull affairs.
Center of a crowd, talking much too loud
Running up and down the stairs.
Well, it seems to me that you have seen too much in too few years.
And though you've tried you just can't hide
Your eyes are edged with tears.

You better stop
Look around
Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
Here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown.

When you were a child
You were treated kind
But you were never brought up right.
You were always spoiled with a thousand toys
But still you cried all night.
Your mother who neglected you
Owes a million dollars tax.
And your father's still perfecting ways of making sealing wax.

You better stop, look around
Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
Here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown.

Oh, who's to blame, that girl's just insane.
Well nothing I do don't seem to work,
It only seems to make matters worse. Oh please.

You were still in school
When you had that fool
Who really messed your mind.
And after that you turned your back
On treating people kind.
On our first trip
I tried so hard to rearrange your mind.
But after while I realized you were disarranging mine.

You better stop, look around
Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
Here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown.
Here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown
Here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown

Mother's Little Helper by the Stones, previously mentioned.
All about the housewives on tranks.

Edited on Sat May-15-10 09:20 AM by Tommy_Carcetti
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cklb7L0OA1c

Depressing as all hell, but a great song:

Breath it in and breath it out
and pass it on it's almost out
We're so creative and so much more
We're high above, but on the floor

It's not a habit, it's cool
I feel alive
If you don't have it your on
the other side

The deeper you stick it in your vein
The deeper the thoughts there's no more pain
I'm in heaven, I'm a god
I'm everywhere, I feel so hot

It's not a habit, it's cool
I feel alive
If you don't have it your on
the other side
I'm not an addict (maybe that's a lie)

It's over now, I'm cold, alone
I'm just a person on my own
Nothing means a thing to me
Oh, nothing means a thing to me

It's not a habit, it's cool
I feel alive
If you don't have it your on
the other side
I'm not an addict (maybe that's a lie)

Free me, leave me
Watch me as I'm going down
Free me, see me
Look at me I'm falling
And I'm falling.........

It is not a habit, it is cool
I feel alive I feel.......
It is not a habit, it is cool
I feel alive

It's not a habit, it's cool
I feel alive
If you don't have it your on
the other side
I'm not an addict (maybe that's a lie)

I'm not an addict, I'm not an addict, I'm not an addict
