If you owned it, borrowed it , rented it or stole it, if you enjoyed driving it, please tell!!!

That Fiat was a real sports car - great control and feel, and I did have it going a bit over 130 with the top down, with more pedal to go, but no more nerve....Had the 2 overhead cams, 4 cyl and Weber 2bbl carb, with a 5 speed...my ex-wife totalled it while she was drunk.x(

At the time I owned a Triumph GT6. Drove the hell out of it all over Italy.

...bought it in 1992 with many many miles on it - it was some guy's company car so it was well-maintained.

It was a standard and man it was a blast to drive. Really got our money's worth out of it too.

Looked a lot like this one...

7. Wife had one of those, felt like it was put together with rubber bands
We had to hold down the front hood (actually the trunk because the engine was in the back) with a belt and every time you hit a pothole the whole car felt like it was going airborn. Plus it would never start in damp weather. The only thing good about it was that it only cost about $2.00 to fill up and the gas lasted a week.

9. I loved my 1987 Buick Grand National
Yeah, it was often mistaken for a Chevy Monte Carlo by the uninformed, but I didn't care. It wasn't about impressing others. It was as reliable as the day is long, and I could fit my best friend in the front and 3 in the back. Big trunk, comfy interior and a limited-build car, so you didn't see many. But, it was what was under the hood that really mattered. On paper, not much to brag about. Turbocharged 3.8 liter doesn't sound like much in such a big piece of Detroit iron. Buick laughably rated it at 245 horses and 360 lbs/ft of torque. It was a high 13-second car off the showroom floor. In a straight line, it would eat it's big brother the Corvette, as well as anything in production from Germany or Italy. Over the next year, I put some money into it and did some upgrades. She was a mid/low 12-second car when I was done, but still totally streetable and legal. Weekend nights hanging with my car club gearheads, then we'd all head down to the Gandy Bridge for the midnight drag races. I'd probably get 7-10 challenges each time, mostly by nonbelievers with 5.0 Mustangs. Lost a time or two, the most memorable being to a brand new 'Vette ZR-1.

Maybe it was because I was a somewhat reckless 19 year old, and I'm remembering the good times with the car. I mean, I've driven some pretty serious machinery (Countach, AMG Hammer, couple 911s, 328), but I loved that car.

"projects," and that one went. But the '70 is all original; the '69 had a lot of work it needed.

21. An old lady friend had a Dart in PA about 1972. Next time I saw her driving it
was in Berkeley CA in 1975. She had driven it to Alaska from PA, stayed there several years and was driving it back to PA. It looked like hell, ran great. I have no idea how many hundreds of thousands of miles it had traveled when she finally got rid of it, but she got her money's worth!

Edited on Mon May-10-10 04:46 PM by mike_c
Back in the 1970s. Getting parts was HELL, but I had a great time in that car.

edited to replace an unexpectedly huge image with this one. Not my car, but one like it. As someone noted up thread about the OP's Fiat model, the build quality was probably not the best-- I mean, I had to slide my foot under the gas pedal and lift it to decelerate, engine torque broke one of the motor mounts, and I once spent six months waiting on a new distributor cap after the original cracked. Still, I had a blast with that car. Rolled it once, and the rag top held up. Me and a passerby rolled it back over, and after it sat for a little while it started back up and I drove it away.

54. Love, Love, LOVE those cars
Funky weird and completely unique.

The 60 and 61 were the best, after that they declined slowly into a bland normal car without a fin to be found. I have nowhere to put it and not much to buy it with but god I'd love to have one.

Sad family story, my wife's grandmother had a green 1960 she bought new but it was sold it before I married into the family. Tragedy!

.
...for the sheer VROOOOOMMMMM of it. 118 MPH but was afraid of blowing it up, so I backed off.

Eventually fell asleep behind the wheel while working split shifts and totaled it.

.
.
Also my li'l 1979 1300cc Honda CVCC car -- underpowered but handled just like a Go-kart. FUN!!!
.
Commuted about 30-40 miles each way to work outside of Nashville and had a l-o-n-g fairly steep remote downhill
stretch on the way home -- would push it HARD every night, but the closest I came to cracking 100 MPH with it
was with a VERY strong tailwind -- got to 99 MPH and no damn further.
.
Probably the last brand-new car under $4000 in the U.S. EVER!!!

30. I've driven lots of things, from Honda scooters to 18-wheelers. The most fun was....
...my '87 Subaru XT.

Yes, I've driven REAL 'Sports Cars',
and the XT was no real Sports Car.
I didn't love it for speed, I loved its FEEL.

The best I can explain it is this:
Did you ever go to a "GoCart Track"
spend your few minutes zipping about,
and think, "It would be awesome if I
could take this GoCart out on the real highway"?

That's what the Subaru XT felt like.
It was like taking a GoCart out onto the highway.
It made my Inner Child very happy.

Sadly, it didn't climb telephone poles worth a DAMN. ::(:

They have always just been something that gets me from point A to point B. I prefer to go with one that does this efficiently as possible while still allowing for a bit of utility. I generally prefer GM and Ford, as they tend to have the highest number of union jobs producing their products.

37. 1975 VW Rabbit.
2-door, 4 speed, power nothing, I bought from a guy who tweaked it to go very fast (the stock top speed was claimed to be 93 MPH - I regularly got it up to 110-115), drove it across the country twice, in blizzards, through the desert, in fog so thick I could barely see the front end of the hood. The front seats folded down so it was big enough to sleep in and the back seats folded up to carry enough beer for a party.

I was very sad when my Rabbit died.

The Oldmobile was also fast... My dad owned that in the 1980's bought at auction and had literally be owned by the little old lady and had less than 10k on it. We got it for about 1k. It was powder blue and in factory condition. Even the AC still worked. More luxury land yacht than car, we drove it for nearly 10 yrs. when we passed it on to my aunt. It died for good some time in the 1990's.

Motorcycle: My 67 Triumph Bonneville

It ran one week out of three and leaked oil all over the garage but oh my god, how I loved that bike! Had a hell of a time getting used to a standard bike with a left foot shifter after I let it go.

(This isn't mine... it's in way better shape)

Car: My MINI Sport

It's like driving a high tech go-kart. Sturdy little beast too.

They had a 1000+ horsepower GT40 that they wouldn't let us drive, or touch. When I look back it would have been worth it to lose my job to get to drive it.
