1. The greatest fantasy illustrator of all time
Primarily because he virtually invented the genre and because his females kicked ass.

23. Kick. Ass.

My older brother had a subscription to Heavy Metal Illustrated, and I remember reading those at maybe age 10 to 13. I'm pretty sure Frank Frazetta was one of my favorite artists. I'm a completely heterosexual woman, but there's still something appealing to me about his depictions of females.

4. Yeah, he was a bit of an influence on my stuff....

The only other artist to affect me more was Bernie Wrightson.

R.I.P. Frank, and thanks!

6. Nice! I wish I could draw.
But everyone else in my family can draw except me. So I have to resort to 3D software - see below. ;)

10. It is resorting.
Yank a few dials, apply some photoshop filters. I do like to play with 3D, but in the end, the most I appreciate are the Moleskine journals I write/draw in. They're way far from anything perfect, but they're original. :hi:

11. Still takes the eye, my friend.
You sell yourself short. I have some of the same misgivings over digital, but in the end it's still creating something from nothing. I just read an interview with Ray Harryhausen, and he said he loves the possibilities that CGI opens up. Digital is just another tool, but it takes an artist to make something from it.

13. Here's a great story about him.

From the Frazetta art book Legacy.

"Shortly after his first stroke, he took "Masai Warrior" down to his studio and told me he was going to work on it," Ellie says. "Frank was having trouble with his right hand and wanted to try painting with his left. I got worried when he scrapped the face off, I couldn't watch anymore and went to bed. I was afraid to look at it in the morning - and it was better! He had improved the face 100%! He had never painted left hand ed before! I was so excited I had to call the kids over to see. Frank's just sitting there with a look on his face, like 'What's the big deal?' That's my husband!"

The documentary about his life "Painting With Fire" is worth a look if you can find it. He was an amazing man, a true inspiration.
