Can margarin be used instead of vegetable oil for frying potatoes?

1. Deep fryer or pan?

Probably not in a deep fryer. Margarine has a lower burning temperature than most oils so it would more likely burn at deep fryer temperatures. It might be OK for pan frying, but it's not the best choice.

3. I've only rarely used margarine anyway,

but I think it tends to splatter when it's heated. And use it only in a skillet - perhaps if the temperature is not very high it might work?

fake diet "spreads" no - they don't even really melt

olive oil or any veg oil would probably be better
