Poll question: The Last Great Stones Album
Granted, many people have an opinion, and most of those opinions lie somewhere before "Dirty Work"...

1. Have to go with Sticky Fingers here.
With "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" being their opus magnum.

8. Outstanding choice of an " opus magnum" ( but c'mon, speak English like us REAL Americans, dammit)
I've heard rumors that this is one of the, if not THE, most favorite thing the sax player ever did with The Stones.

9. LOL. I'll tone it down for the hoi polloi.
I've heard that too about Bobby Keys. Truly one of the great rock sax players. That tune is so perfect though, I can imagine everybody associated with had a similar feeling.

26. "Hoi Polloi"...that don't sound American either. Better not catch you in Arizona, boy
Yeah, B.K. told me once that it wasn't intended to go on so long but that they just kept jamming and they kept taping, and put it out like that.
There was a pretty funny commercial a few years ago for a local classic rock station ( probably syndicated with different voiceovers for different stations) that had somebody blasting Can't You Hear Me Knockin' in their apartment , and the neighbor girl pounding on the wall over and over yelling "hey"..."hey"......HEY !"...."TURN IT UP". I usually don't like commercials, period, even clever ones, but I thought that was pretty funny...and again, a perfect Opie's Magnum P.I. or whatever you pointy headed liberal elitists call em .

2nd best song on the album after Tumbling Dice.

A close 2nd at that.

36. I think there is definitely an argument that Sticky Fingers is the better album though.
Most people give Exile the #1 slot, but I go back and forth between Sticky and Let it Bleed.

3. "Some Girls" has so much sloppy charm to it...
"Tattoo You" was pretty good, but I'd say "Some Girls" was far better, and in my mind is the last "great" one. Not a single bad song on it, and plenty of great ones.

11. I love "Some Girls" but I knew it was the beginning of the end for great Stones Albums
Edited on Thu May-13-10 03:02 PM by LynneSin
Just like "In through the Out Door" with Led Zeppelin. There is no doubt these are both classic albums but something was missing that made them legendary albums like Physical Grafitti or Beggars Banquet.

I suspect that if Bonham had not died that LZ would have gone the route of Rolling Stones - still popular, still selling massive concerts to people who perceive they need to see this band in concert but putting out shit records just to make a buck. I also suspect that a few members would have left the band and be constantly replaced by other members, which also degrades the legend of the band. Sure LZ has done a few 1-off concerts (not including solo work or the Page & Plant years) but ever time they played as Led Zeppelin they stuck with Jason Bonham as their drummer, which is as close to having a complete LZ without digging up John Bonham.

43. Definitly "Some Girls"...
Although I must say, I loved Mick's solo album:

"She's The Boss"

I remember playing the crap out of that record in the mid eighties.

6. "Other" was a great one...good beat, easy to dance to; I gave it an 87...
but actually, I'm thinking Some Girls. And great only because of the presence of quite a few absolutely killer songs; but there were some not particularly memorable cuts... The last album that I thought had pretty much no weak moments was Sticky Fingers, which may have been their greatest ever, although Beggars Banquet and Out of Our Heads are right up there too... I thought Emotional Rescue, Tattoo You, and Dirty Work were all damn good, but not great....Just my opinionated opinions before heading off to work (NOOOOOOOO).

10. "Exile" is the Stones' answer to Rubber Soul and Revolver
Even if Sgt Pepper's gets more publicity, true Beatles fans know the other 2 (Brit versions) are the real cream of the crop.

Same with "Exile". I'm so jazzed about the unreleased tracks! But I also love Sticky Fingers and even It's only Rock and Roll. All of 'em are ear candy because of one thing: (say it with me) Mick Taylor played lead guitar. I never thought he was the Hendrix of his time, but he and Keith sounded far more amazing together than Keith and Ronnie. I guess he quit cuz their lifestyle was killing him, but I miss his tasty licks on the later LP's.

14. Tattoo You.
Their very best period is Let it Bleed to Exile but they were still putting out quality material throughout the 70's. Tattoo was the last full good album. They've merely had good songs here and there from then on.

Byrds, Dylan (not a band) Nashville Skyline, NRPS. Can't stand standard country music, (I do like the original Hank Williams that I grow up on).

21. And they became the premier rock n' countrified blues band during the height of their adrogynous...
foppish, decadent, "Factory-ish", etc... years.
It was a great combination that doesn't work on paper. But it certainly worked onstage and in the studio.

performances by anybody that I have ever heard...I can't wait to hear the re-done "Exile" - I don't think they did anything as good since. Mick taylor was great on that album as was Wyman!
