ACLU and facebook

(instructions for privacy settings)

Dear ACLU Member,

According to news reports, Facebook has called an "all hands" meeting
today to discuss its privacy policies. That's because they are facing
a brewing revolt among Facebook users alarmed by the company's
cavalier attitude toward protecting your privacy.

In recent months, Facebook has rolled out some very privacy-unfriendly
practices, from the "privacy transition" that took away
privacy controls to "instant personalization" that instantly shares
your personal information with third party pages without your consent.

At every step, the ACLU has been there to push back. Why? Because the
less control you have over your own personal information, the more
likely that information could end up in the wrong hands -- including the
government's.

Sign the ACLU's petition. Tell Facebook loud and clear that you want
control of your personal information.

2. My experience says there are probably a lot of clueless people out there.
Between the teens (of which I am related to a few) and the luddite geezers (of which I am one), people don't grasp how easily information is transmitted and used.

I have a slightly learning disabled relative who is constantly getting scammed by something on facebook in relation to her cell phone (at least that is where we THINK it is happening) so that is my personal beef.

3. Facebook has been changing the settings in sneaky ways so the level of privacy intrusion has changed
Edited on Thu May-13-10 05:27 PM by Gormy Cuss
That's the issue. Unless you are tipped off by an outside source you may not even know to look for the change in privacy levels.

eta: it always amazes me that the threat of the government having access to private info (as referenced in the ACLU alert) scares people more than private business who will use said data to profile consumers and report such profiles to others for a fee with very little regulation limiting this data mining. Credit reports are nothing compared to the new levels of data mining and we all know how accurate credit reports are.
