The Crucifixion of LeBron James
In the same manner that a pathologically insecure and embittered spouse inevitably destroys a marriage to even the most noble partner, so too the Cleveland media and fans are in the process of driving LeBron James out of the emotional house-of-cards known as Cleveland.
With a hysteria reminiscent of 17th century Salem, local radio talk show hosts and their callers, TV commentators and, especially, the Plain Dealer sports writers have hinted at a range of dark and insidious motives for James poor play in games 4 and 5 of the Boston series. In a tediously snide piece titled “Act Like a Winner,” columnist Bud Shaw ridiculed James as an “immature superstar” who looked as if he had handed a New York travel guide to the trainer during the game for safe keeping. Cavs beat writer Brian Windhorst spent the week beating on James like a spurned schoolboy, calling him, among other things, a moody guy whose lackluster play may simply be indicative of LeBron being in a bad mood, before concluding that no matter what he does the rest of his career, James will forever be defined by his performance in Game 5 (sort of like the Mark of Cain, I guess).
