We get to play the proud parent routine, and enjoy it !
Edited on Mon May-17-10 03:56 PM by DFW
Our younger daughter, who ten years ago had never had school in English, just graduated magna cum laude from
Pace Law School. My wife and I are here in the States for the occasion. Bobby Kennedy, Jr. who teaches at Pace
Law, introduced the commencement speaker, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson of New Orleans, who gave a great and
inspiring speech.

with a fellow graduate from Cameroun

and Bobby Kennedy and Lisa Jackson at the Podium

Our daughter also got the National Aassociation of Women Lawyers Award, about which we knew nothing.

Now the real world begins, but for one day, we got to crow.

So happy and full of hope. You have every reason to be crowing.
Good job Mom and Dad......

5. Thanks to everyone.
She would have liked to work in New York, but there seems to be no work there for a brilliant graduate
who specialized in international law. Luckily she retains her German nationality, so she can work in
the European Union, and a firm in Frankfurt appears very eager to have her.

She would miss New York, but, on the other hand, in Germany she would get full health coverage and six
weeks paid vacation, which German firms ENCOURAGE their people to take so as to avoid burnout.

Major crossing of fingers as to where she ends up working!

10. Thanks Notorious!
We wish we knew for sure WHERE she is going. The Frankfurt arm of the British firm that sounds most promising
has already told here she would be moving around from Germany to England to France to Abu Dhabi to Mali in West
Africa. She speaks French and has been to West Africa before for the UN War Crimes Tribunal in Sierra Leone, and
is one of the few people they talked to that was willing to go down there. She hopes eventually to get postings
to the USA as well, and if they end up putting her in their New York office, well, as that is where she wanted to
be to begin with, it wouldn't break her heart.

11. She has been arguing with us since she could talk--the born lawyer!
Her boyfriend has already resigned himself to her telling him where they will live.

She is definitely the brains of the outfit!

17. We're hoping so, thanks!
We raised both our girls to realize that their home is a planet, not one piece of land with artificial borders
drawn by some of its inhabitants, and so far, they seem to have gotten the message.

18. We're hoping!
She is still waiting for that first confirmed job offer, but we're pretty sure there will be one.
If I can find a way to not make it look too much like home movies, I'll post on what happens.

There are a lot of people out there in crappy situations right now, quite a few on DU, and I would
feel wrong about crowing too much. But if she's doing something cool, especially if it ends up affecting
us politically, I'll post. She got a congratulatory email from Howard Dean and on the phone from Dr. Ruth.
She was definitely the only one in her class to get THAT!
