1. Barney Miller is one of my favorite sitcoms of all time.
It was brilliant. Taxi was a great show, too, but BM was very special. Nick, Wojo, Fish, Dietrich (semantics is my life), Harris: I still remember these characters.

2. The quality was more consistent on Barney Miller.
Edited on Mon May-17-10 06:29 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
As Andy Kaufman's star rose, Taxi became increasingly annoying...especially with the introduction of Carol Kane as "Simka."

Although I know that someone's gonna reply to this and say that she was the best part of the show.

Plus, Barney Miller had character actor James Gregory as Inspector Frank Luger...and Taxi didn't. He was easily one of the funniest, most twisted supporting characters on ANY sitcom.

5. Well, for me, that's the thing about Barney Miller.
Every character was a little bit twisted... kinda like the people one meets in real life. I think BM was the best TV cop show ever, not just the best cop sitcom.

10. I agree completely
Kaufman was OK for a while, but his act got old, over used and the whole Simka thing just made it worse.

It's hard to say which I liked better. Both were very good in their own way.

4. I liked Barney Miller better, but Taxi launched a lot of careers.
Not all of them impressive--Tony Danza and Marilu Henna weren't earthshaking. But Christopher Lloyd, Danny Devito, Judd Hirsch, and Andy Kauffman were. Kauffman wasn't really launched by Taxi, but he got a big boost from it.

6. Barney Miller was good to the last show.
They pulled it before it started to tank. Taxi fell far by the end.

"Hey Barn, let's go down to the pier and shoot some clams".

11. I've heard that lots of cops thought Barney Miller was the most realistic cop show..period.
Even though it was a comedy and didn't have a lot of shoot em up scary stuff in it.
No, I can't remember where I heard it. Barney Miller edges out Taxi for me too. The cast just seemed more real to me.

12. Barney Miller was subtle humor. Taxi was slapstick.

Nothing wrong with either. Just different.

18. Loved them both but I'd say Taxi is my fave of the two.
Louie DePalma and Rev. Jim are two all-time great characters.

20. Hash vs. Coke
They both had a very funny drug episode. I think the hash episode of Barney Miller may be the funniest thing ever done on television.

22. Taxi was great, but Barney Miller by far.
.
Mendocino above already posted the funniest line from the
most straight-faced character actor -- Jack Soo -- who said,
while cleaning his pistol (after Wojo had unwittingly gotten
them all high with pot brownies), "Hey, Barn! Let's go down
to the beach and shoot some clams!"
.
