1. probably encrtytion
It's probably copy protection encryption embedded on the DVDs. There are programs you can use to break it out like DVD shrink that might help.

4. ALL my music is in mp3 format.
I have about 55Gb worth of audio and about 1 terabyte of video. None of it in somebody's proprietary format.
I can play it anywhere and make a copy for myself without any hassles.

5. You can, it just involves a few extra steps which may not be legal where you live.

A free app. I'm not sure if it's for Mac only, but it can convert DVD's for iPods.
