Does anyone know what causes this?...
I have these holes in my backyard, small, tunnel like. I first noticed them after a big snowfall last winter, but saw a bunch more today. My dad (who lives 2 houses down) also has them. We can't figure what made them. I have a bunch of squirrels around my house and I think a bunny is living under one of my sheds. Any ideas?

7. Funny, that was my first thought..
not a rattlesnake, but some kind of snake. But I would imagine with two dogs they would have either caught one or been bitten. So I don't think it's anykind of snake.

4. If that's your finger in the first pic,
then I guess from the size of the hole it's crickets. Do you have crickets there?

5. Yes it's my finger...
I tried to resize the picture but couldn't. And yes we have crickets here. Usually don't see them until fall though. There's this "new" type of cricket that showed up about 2 years ago, looks like a spider and cricket combo, and they're very, very fast. Much faster than any cricket I've ever seen.

The holes are small but a perfect tunnel like shape. Today I poured water in one just to see how deep it went, and it went pretty deep. It sounded like a cup filling up. Nothing came out, I did it slowly I didn't want to drown anything.

9. Mole cricket is my guess.
They have a rather advanced deep habitat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mole_cricket

Best to see them is if you approach the tunnel opening very slowly. Sometimes they just sit outside but are very alert, and very, very fast.

13. Well at least one mystery is solved...
The mole cricket looks just like the cricket/spider thingy. I looked up what their tunnels look like and it does look like what's in my backyard. But I also came across mining bees, and their tunnels look like it too. From what I've read they're not aggressive.

mining bee tunnel..

19. The same people who make crop circles came to your yard with a dirt auger.
They did it in the middle of the night, of course.

For a well you need a much bigger auger, or maybe even a shovel.
