Blackadder's codpiece for sale
Edited on Thu May-20-10 01:24 PM by supernova

The black leather male accessory worn by Edmund, Lord Blackadder throughout the comedy's second series, set during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I -- 1558-1603 -- is to be sold at auction this weekend.

Codpieces were an essential part of the well-dressed Elizabethan man's wardrobe, allowing him to urinate without removing his trousers.

Blackadder's was the butt of repeated jokes...

It is expected to fetch thousands of pounds at Cameo Auctioneers' sale of TV and Film Costumes, to be held in Midgham, Berkshire, on Sunday.

....

"We've put an estimate of £1,000 on it, but the truth is it could go through the roof."

7. They are also auctioning off The Highlander's Kilt
That would make a fine if somewhat incompatible combo.

8. Interesting about the derivation of the name
Years ago I worked at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. One of my jobs was hand delivering sensitive budget information to the various departments. One day I had to go down to the offices of the Costume Institute and they had a cartoon hanging up that made me laugh. It showed a Tudor guy and gal. The woman was both looking down her nose and holding it, if you know what I mean, and the guy is standing there holding up a dead fish. The caption read: "What else would I keep in my cod piece?".

14. The codpiece from the first series could almost go through the roof.
or a wall anyway.

"'The Black Russian,' it always terrifies the clergy! Ha-ha-ha-ha......"

I don't think I can even put it on here..without editing, that is.
