State legislator Bruce Dammeier - R, just knocked on my door, seeking my vote in November. |
|
I had a fairly pleasant talk with him, but told him in no uncertain terms, I'm a Democrat, and not likely to vote for any Repub anytime in the near future.
He asked me why. I told him.
I told him that I crewed a tank in the Gulf in 1991. I told him than when we invaded Iraq in 2003, and I announced I was opposed to the war, everyone who called me "un-American" for doing so voted Republican.
He asked me if I had any 'test' questions. I said: "Sure. What do you think of the immigration law in Arizona?"
He told me he didn't think it was our business, and that no other state could tell Arizona what to do.
I said it sure is our business. They're violating the U.S. Constitution. If a U.S. citizen is stopped and detained down there because he looks like he's not a U.S. citizen, that's a violation of his 4th Amendment rights. That's something every state has a duty to be concerned about.
He IS opposed to the notion of war as a first, and only, resort. But that's not enough for me.
He was a pleasant guy, very nice. But, when they're knocking on the doors of total strangers, that's how they get you. They save the mouth-foaming and fire-breathing for safe audiences.
Sorry, Bruce. You barked up the wrong tree...
