What Does Your Outfit Cost?
Study shows women wear over $1,400 in clothes and jewelry a day.
Posted by Kristin Larson Tuesday, May 25, 2010 4:48:48 AM
We know how much most gals love clothes and jewelry, but a recent study initially surprised me (a former slave to the mall!)

According to a study funded by UK-based Sheila's Wheels insurance company, the average woman wears 1,000 pounds worth of clothes and accessories per day—or, according to today's exchange, about $1,440.

The study says the typical outfit consists of a top worth about $30, skirt $44, coat $90, shoes $70, handbag $150, jewelry worth more than $500 and watch about $110. The study also included estimates for underwear, tights and knitwear.

All in all, this means the average woman's outfit is worth $135 more than the typical man's, who wears about $1377 in clothes and accessories per day.

Wow. I'm definitely not your average woman. But now that I think about it, I have a nice purse and some easy spirit sneakers to help my flat feet so I am a little closer to that number than I first thoug. I also rolled my eyes at the jewelry cost, but I suppose a wedding or engagement ring would be $500 alone. Hmm.

4. I could replace most of my wardrobe, jewelry included, for that amount of money.
I've just never been one to spend a lot on clothes. What I'm wearing today cost less than $150.00 and that includes clothing, undergarments, shoes, purse and jewelry.

6. Needing some replacements, but...
.
Surgical scrub top: $10
.
Dickey's black work pants
(can pass for slacks): $15
.
Socks: $2
.
Reading glasses: $1
.
Cheap velcro sneakers: $12

The only jewelry I've ever
worn was a watch (not since
it was torn off my wrist
during a mugging in 1973)
and a wedding band (not in
over 30 years).
.
$42 -- and that's my pretty standard "uniform" now.

Not that much. ...
...Public employee. Good insurance, so-so pay. On court days a $300 suit, $20 shirt, pretty ordinary underwear, $3 socks, a $200 watch, $80 shoes and a $20 tie. Every other day it's a $100 coat, $30 pants, $10 tie, $14 watch and the same shirts and footwear.

9. Really. My wife helps manage a factory...
...and she doesn't wear any shiney bits. She has a cheap watch and casual clothes what will eventually be wrecked on the factory floor.

10. About $40 I guess.
I mean, I wear t-shirts and jeans. If I can avoid shoes and socks, I will. You already know I hate clothes, so the undies most likely aren't there at any given moment. So, for the t-shirt and Jeans, I'm guessing $25 for the jeans and $15 or so for the t-shirt.

13. Interesting!
Red dressy top: $25, H&M
Black slacks: $50, Gap
Charcoal cardigan because the a/c in here is ridiculous, $30, H&M
Black ballet slipper style shoes: $90, OTBT
Undergarments: $70, Victoria's Secret
Purse: $25, Target
Sunglasses: $350, Chanel

No jewelry.

Total: $640-875

This would normally go up a bit, as the Target bag isn't my usual purse. Normally, I'd have to add $250 for my black leather B. Makowsky bag.

15. Most of that is in jewelry though.
I'm surprised it's that low, matter of fact what with wedding rings and watches being on there.

Hell, if I didn't have a rescue to run and spent money on myself, I'd have a nice Tag Heuer or Omega watch. So right there, I'd be butt ass naked wearing only a watch and already over $2k in "outfit" costs.

17. I didn't even wear clothing that cost that much on my wedding day!
Today:
Jeans - $20
tshirt - $12
panties and bra - $20

Add maybe $20 for sneakers or sandals and this would be a typical day for me.

Edited on Wed May-26-10 06:03 PM by Kat45
I also have repeat wearings of clothing over many, many years (when it lasts). I've had the clothes I wore today for so long that I don't know how much some cost or where I got them.

Sleeveless black T-shirt dress that I think I got at Newport News for about $10-12 at least 10 years ago.
Silk scarf I used as a belt, probably paid around $10 for it.
Underwear, $5 on sale at Victoria's Secret. (That's the cheapest I've found underwear anywhere in recent years.)
Sandals--I have no idea. I think they belonged to my mother, which means I didn't buy them but I know she never spent much on clothes.
Bra would be the expensive piece, probably around $30 on sale.

However, $250 of that is shoes and purse. I rarely wear jewelry.

23. If you buy pricier bags and/or shoes, I can see that. Or if you have to
wear suits for work, I can also see that.

But on an average day, that seems a bit high. I only wear a wedding band (no engagement ring) and some simple earrings. I do wear my dad's Hamilton Seahawk watch, though ... and my dad gave my husband the Omega watch he received after graduating from med school.

And while I object to the pollution and environmental catastrophe gold mining and other mineral mining can do, I must admit to severe weakness and strong covets for a pair of pearl and diamond earrings I saw a while back. Covet covet covet. If I could find something similar in estate jewelry, I'd love to buy them whenever I could afford to.
