When I wink at my dog, she winks back |
|
What have I inadvertantly said to her, and what has she said back to me?
I'm serious.

1. Well, with cats it means something like "I'm cool here, you're cool over there". |

edit- and yes, I'm serious. There is the 'cat blink' thing. It helps if you are trying to bond with a cat.
I used to be able to do a big fake yawn while my cat watched and make her yawn too. :)

2. That's funny about the yawning |
|
I never tried that with my dog.
And I know cats do this thing with their eyes when they narrow them, to mean something like things are cool with them.
You know how you read about how eye contact with a dog is a power thing? My dog will stare me down for as long as I will stare at her, she just never looks away. But I never interpreted it as a power thing, more of a curiosity thing, she wants to know what I'm thinking or going to do. So I like making faces at her and watching her reponse, and we do the winking thing back and forth.

4. NoName and I used to blink at each other alla time... |
|
. . . . . ...and I tried to teach her to wink one eye, but she'd just stare at me. . . . . . I'm sure she wondered why I was speaking gibberish at her. . . . . . I think it's kinda cool that they realize that what they see from the inside of their eyelids is what they're seeing YOU do -- only from the outside. . . Evidence of really abstract thought. . I think. .

winking is always about the common enemy
remember, that is why grandparents and grandchildren get along so well - they have a common enemy
