4. Teddy Bear... nearly lost him too. |
|
Medium sized green patchwork teddy bear.
Mom was going to give him to Goodwill... stopped her in time, but the bunny rabbit with the red shirt that, when I was ~3, had grabbed and put into the shopping cart had gone.
Great, now I'm thinking about my childhood again... I don't want to remember.

I like it because I see her for the woman she once was and should have been had she made it past 33.
I often think of my first baseball glove. I can still remember what it smelled like -- leather, oil, grass, dirt, and summer. I wish I still had it.

7. Where are my teddy's eye buttons? |

Teddy is, these days, a fairly creepy looking teddy bear. My kid refuses to look at him because the empty sockets are so damned disquitening.

I received it (or rather my mother did) even before I was born 14 years ago from her co-worker. Keep in mind this is the same guy who said I was a "cute, little fetus" at my first birthday party :P

12. Far too much -- I'm a pack rat |
|
As an extreme example, when I was three, the little boy upstairs gave me some strangely shaped pieces of plastic in a variety of colors with numbers and dates stamped into them. I think they must have been samples or test items from where his father worked, but at the time they seemed very mysterious and I was fascinated by them. They had holes in the corners, so I strung them on a string and liked to carry them around with me. I still have them.
Among the clutter currently on my desk is a paperweight in the form of a giant paper clip that I've had since I was maybe eight or nine. In the desk drawer are the red-handled scissors that I got when I was three or four. In another drawer are the weird little magnet with a wooden handle that I've had for as long as I can remember, my grandfather's magnifying glass in its worn leather case that I used constantly when I was a kid, and my Girl Scout knife and compass.
I also still have the toychest I got passed down from my cousin when I was three (it's currently in the basement, full of extra computer keyboards and speakers) and the bookcase I got when I was five.
Dolls? Oh, my parents leaned on me to give them away to the orphans when I was about twelve. I've regretted it from time to time, but I think I probably care about this other stuff more.

|
Edited on Sun Mar-28-04 01:06 AM by camero
Where they asked me to get in a locker and the caption read, "Well, you told me to put EVERYTHING in my locker". It was taken when I was in the 1st grade in 1972.

I still remember my getting the picture taken to this day. I was so small I could fit inside the locker and I remember my teacher pulling me out of class to ask me to do it. I was small even then.
That's funny you had the same kind of caption. :hi:

Actually that bear was the first thing my parents ever gave me. (Apart from, you know, a place to live, food, diapers, etc... I'm adopted, so don't flame me for neglecting to include "life" in that list, cuz it just ain't so.)
Never named it, or if I did, its name's long forgotten, as are the whereabouts of its nose and one of its eyes.

23. "Music Memory Contest" certificates... |
|
That was a contest for elementary school students in Indianapolis. The ISO (under Izler Solomon) would play snippets of classical pieces, WIRE radio carried it live, and we listened and filled out out answer sheets. I participated in '64, '65, and '66.
All certificates are stamped "Pefect Score".

It has the Peanuts on it. My mother bought it for me the year I was born (1978), and I used it - even if just as decoratively - until I went off to college. Now it's in a plastic ziplock bag. The colors have faded, and it's wearing a bit thin in some places, but I think of home when I see it. One day, it will be framed with picture of my childhood home.
