Atlanta CEO DeFarra Gaymon Killed By Cop in Sex Sweep of N.J. Park
Sometimes you can just be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The family of a prominent Atlanta CEO who was shot and killed during an undercover police crackdown of public sex in a New Jersey park is demanding a federal investigation, accusing the officer who said he fired in self defense of lying.

DeFarra "Dean" Gaymon was allegedly engaging in a sex act in public when shot. DeFarra "Dean'' Gaymon, 48, a married father of four, was in Branch Brook Park in Newark, N.J., at 6 p.m. on July 16, when he encountered the plainclothes cop.

The 29-year-old male officer, who has not been identified, told the Essex County Prosecutor's office that he had gone to retrieve a pair of handcuffs he'd lost in the woods during a separate arrest in the sweep. When he bent down to pick up the cuffs, Gaymon approached and was "engaged in a sex act" alone, the officer told authorities. The officer said he placed Gaymon under arrest.

"Mr. Gaymon appeared to panic, assaulted the police officer and fled," said the statement by Prosecutor Robert Laurino.

2. Maybe the CEO rejected Officer Gaymon.
More bizarre love triangles.

Does anybody know if Gaymon was wearing stilettos or pantyhose?
I haven't hit the link yet... on the way there now.

4. I just watched the video... They said the officer had to be
sedated after the incident(had been for three days and is continuing to be sedated... )because of the incident.

I am thinking the officer was busy trying to get some gay but then changed his mind and shot Gaymon.

This IS a weird story.

5. Cops are trained to shoot in the chest and head.
They are trained not to let a suspect get that close. There's a 21 foot rule which says that if someone is within 21 feet they can cover that distance and stab you before you can draw a gun to defend yourself, so cops are trained not to let someone closer than that without having their gun drawn.

So I'm having trouble thinking this guy turned and ran, then somehow the cop let him get close enough again to attack him, then the guy had the clearance to reach in his pocket and begin threatening the cop, and then finally he got close enough again for the cop to shoot him in the gut instead of shooting him in the chest, as he's trained. The cop should have called for backup, should have had his gun out and trained on the guy, and shouldn't have let the guy get close enough to have to shoot him in the gut. And if the guy didn't show a weapon, the cop should have been in hand to hand combat with the man, or, assuming he had a taser, should have tasered him instead of shooting.

So either the cop is lying about what happened, or he's an awful cop, or the media is doing a terrible job of telling this story.

11. Apparently the cop never called for backup until he'd shot the man
The un-named undercover officer was in the park with his partner and they had just made an arrest. The prosecutor (there are no direct quotes from the officer) says the officer was retracing his path through the secluded part of the woods to find the handcuffs he'd dropped during the previous chase.

The prosecutor alleges that when the officer showed DeFarra Gaymon (known to everyone as "Dean") his badge, Gaymon pushed him down to the ground and fled, allegedly shouting that he was going to kill the officer while he was fleeing. Yet it appears that it is only after he had mortally wounded Dean Gaymon that the officer called for back-up, not when the trained professional police officer was knocked down by this man 20 years older than him, or when he subsequently tried to cuff Gaymon and was not sucessful.

Autopsy Report Shows Georgia Man Died from a Single Gunshot Wound

Sheriff's Detective Involved in Park Shooting Files Report

Newark - Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino today announced that an autopsy performed by the Essex County Medical Examiner's Office determined DeFarra "Dean'' Gaymon, a 48-year-old Georgia man, died from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Gaymon was fatally shot at approximately 6 p.m. on Friday, July 16, 2010 by an undercover Essex County sheriff's detective investigating complaints of public sexual activity at Branch Brook Park in Newark. The 29-year-old officer, who has been with the department for eight years, is fully cooperating with the prosecutor's office. He gave a statement to investigators yesterday evening.

According to the officer, he made an arrest in an unrelated case when he realized he has loss a pair of handcuffs during that arrest. After the suspect in that earlier case was secured, the officer told his partner he was going back into the woods, retracing his steps in an effort to find the missing handcuffs. While bending down to retrieve the handcuffs, the plainclothes officer was approached by Mr. Gaymon who was engaged in a sex act at the time.

The officer pulled out his badge, identified himself as a police officer and informed Mr. Gaymon he was under arrest. Mr. Gaymon appeared to panic, assaulted the police officer and fled. A foot chase ensued. The officer made repeated commands to Mr. Gaymon to stop and submit. Mr. Gaymon ignored those commands, did not raise his arms or make his hands visible and repeatedly threatened to kill the officer. Mr. Gaymon then lunged at and attempted to disarm the officer while reaching into his own pocket. Fearing for his life, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking Mr. Gaymon once.
The officer immediately called for help and rendered first aid to Mr. Gaymon who was rushed to University Hospital and was pronounced dead at 9 p.m. No weapon was recovered at the scene. The officer, who was also taken to the hospital, was treated for trauma and released. He has not been cleared to return to work at this time. He was on medication and under a doctor's care for the weekend.

The next of kin have been notified. Gaymon was married and has four minor children. He was in New Jersey to attend his 30th class reunion at Montclair High School.
The investigation is ongoing. Witnesses with information are asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Professional Standards Bureau at 973-266-4250 or the Homicide Unit at 1-877-847-7432.

The case will be presented to a grand jury as is required under guidelines established by the Office of the Attorney General in all cases involving police shootings.

So far it is not known if there were any witnesses. While the shooting appears to have taken place by the banks of a pond in Branch Brook Park, one online poster said it wouldn't be likely that someone was strolling in the vicinity of the pond as it smelled like rotting meat. It was 99 degrees F. in Newark that day, which I'm sure would have exacerbated the smell.
