21 years of school and I have no skills
For pete's sake, make sure your kids learn a craft AND go to college.

Cosmetology, haberdashery, masonry, you name it. Those skills travel.

2. Same here... I can't even type.
I had 13 yrs of public school (with kindergarten), four years undergraduate, another couple of years (part-time) to get my permanent certification, and then another four years to get my master's degree. If I didn't have a job now, I would never get one in today's economy.

3. Have you ever considered an exciting and high-paying career as a trucker?
Edited on Thu Jul-22-10 10:57 AM by Tobin S.
See America and get paid to do it. Every day is a new adventure!

Do I sound like I'd make a good recruiter? Actually, except for the high-paying part, it's not too far from the truth.

4. I can't back a small trailer into a large parking lot
I can't even imagine having to parallel park an 18 wheeler.

5. No sweat, driver, we'll show you how it's done
You'll be backing up like a pro in no time. Just sign here on the dotted line and agree to pay us $5000 for a month's worth of education and you'll be on the road to professional driving.

Seriously, I could show you how it's done. The first day I tried backing up I spent 4 hours on it and couldn't get that trailer to back up straight to save my life. But the next day I accomplished it and what had seemed impossible the day before seemed do-able then.

10. I have proven in two countries that if you do everything else very, very well,
parallel parking isn't a deal-breaker. In fact, in one country in which I hold a driver's license, I wasn't even asked to parallel park during the practical exams, because I did everything else perfectly. :hi:

6. I'm thinking of getting my pharmacy tech diploma after my bachelor's degree.

My dad actually told me he'd be "more proud of me" if I got a master's degree instead, but whatever. Who says that to their kid?

Also, this post reminded me of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4f-4CajQyg

7. Degrees (or a lack thereof) are OFTEN a source of inexplicable snobbery...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
...as I've heard people with AND without college experience
speak derisively of the "other camp".
.
.
.
Degrees can open up more doors in many cases -- but they ain't
no guarantee o' NUTHIN'.
.
.
.
I've known and worked on water issues with the watermen of the
Chesapeake Bay area... many of whom had dropped out of GRADE
school to work on Daddy's boat and who were, as a group, some
of the smartest, most aware, most well-read and well-informed
people I've ever had the pleasure to meet.
.
I've know people with multiple advanced degrees who hadn't nary
a fuckin' clue.
.
.
.
.
.
You're so right about having a fallback position as far as
putting food on the table and a roof over heads.
