Some photos of our recent successful salmon-fishing trip and some beautiful scenery
Edited on Thu Aug-05-10 12:36 AM by Blue_In_AK
My brother, who lives in Homer and has a boat, took us across Kachemak Bay last Thursday to dipnet for sockeye salmon in China Poot Creek. Before the 1964 quake, this used to be a very prolific spawning stream with a lake where the baby salmon would grow. After the quake, the topography changed to such a degree that the fish could no longer navigate the falls and get to the lake, closing off the normal run. Now our fish & game people stock the lake with hatchery-raised small salmon, turn them loose in the lake and then let them migrate downstram to the ocean. When they come back in a couple of years, they can't get up the stream to spawn, so licensed resident fishermen are allowed to dipnet at the mouth of the creek for six salmon per day. We like to stock our freezers this way.

This is the Homer harbor at 4:00 a.m. We wanted to ride into the mouth of the creek with the tide.

My husband dipnetting up by the falls. I didn't want to risk walking too far upstream on those slippery and sharp rocks with the camera.

3. We didn't see any grizzlies,
but we did see a black bear along the shoreline when we were out on the bay. It's pretty awesome to see them out in their natural habitat like that. It's one of the things I love about living up here in the northland.

7. I grew up in BC
I used to LOVE going up the coast and seeing stuff like that. There's always a bear on the ocean! Once I got to watch a cub (From the safety of a boat 100 feet offshore, flip over rocks looking for dinner.

Sockeyes are my favorite salmon. They taste the best, and they're just the right size. A fillet is perfect for two or three people.
