Have you ever had to live without toilet paper? Reason I ask is this.

Toilet paper is something we more or less take for granted.

Visit a Third World country, and you'll find out that for most people, it's a fricking LUXURY.

I've visited two such countries, and I've learned to appreciate toilet paper. It annoys me when I see that somebody's yard has been TP'd. I think of those people in Third World countries.

3. A Comment to Valerie. You are correct, that complaint is not the best part of that.
Although I think she may not have known it would be read at the time. Nobody is perfect.

And it is important to think on better things, and not give up on goals. If it was to take from someone that was in need or did not have enough, it would be wrong. And I doubt that comment is the main part of her comment.

4. What we call trash, they call treasure
You see a tree that's been TP'd, someone else would say "wow, toilet paper really does grow on trees".

Extend this thinking to discarded Coke bottles, and you have the movie "The Gods Must Be Crazy", an old movie, but well worth the cost on Netflix.

:hi:

Anyway, no I've never lived in such a country, though I visited one where we had to pay the attendant for a few sheets of TP. Strange transaction.

5. I appreciate it. When one of my son's friends TP'd a tree
in our yard (I think ours was the closest house for a few kids to go to quickly at night when they were 13) we filled a garbage bag with the TP and saved it in the shed to wipe off greasy bicycle parts, paint drips, etc.. There were several cardboard tubes worth, and it was the expensive cushiony kind. We thought of leaving the bag on his doorstep so his parents would find out about his wastefulness, but I know they'd have thrown it in the trash!

While visiting Jamaica in 1985, when my brother and his family were living there, we found that plastic bags to take to the marketplace for fruits and vegetables are a luxury, so I have an appreciation for those, too. I use plastic bags several times before recycling them.

6. Probably the VAST majority of things we do or use can be looked upon as "wasteful"...
.
.
.
.
...when you think of people in Third World countries.
.
.
.
I remember TP'ing a neighbor's house around 1970 -- they had two
cute teenaged daughters who were well-liked. They were a "target
of affection", I guess.
.
.
.
Midway through the process, I realized that their MOM was right
there beside me, enthusiastically throwing a roll over one of their
trees.
.
.
.
Thinking we were busted, I stared with my mouth open until she
laughed and said, "THEY'RE going to be cleaning this up -- not ME!!!?"
.
.
.
That was a FUN family.

9. More stupid tricks with TP
For some real fun, throw a roll out of an airplane at 8,000' or so and then see how many times you can cut it with your wing.

7. actually most of them probably use water for cleansing
so much more sanitary. And then since they don't eat the junk we do, they probably don't produce as much waste product.

8. I wouldn't go that far
I've been to countries where people wipe their ass with their hand and smear it on the walls. In many 3rd world countries they eat a lot more high fiber foods in greater bulk, so I'm pretty sure they can pinch a pretty mean loaf.

21. Egypt and Saudi Arabia
I'm sure it happens in many (if not most) middle eastern countries. I've also seen it in India, but I'm not sure if it's as common.

You have to get out of the tourist areas to see it, but it does happen. In most middle eastern countries, handing someone something with your left hand is poor etiquette because that's the hand you use to wipe your ass with. That's why under Sharia law they cut off either your whole right hand or fingers on your right hand for theft. That way the thief is condemned to eat with the same hand they use to wipe their ass.

Been down n' out more than once for a spell.

24. haven't had to do it for an extended period
though when I visited Russia in the early 90s - TP was hard to find, and very similar to sandpaper when you could find it.

My mom actually brought quite a bit of tp with us, knowing it could be a problem.
