This Robert Shaw scene from Jaws about the Indianapolis still gives me chills
I've seen it several times. Watched it today, and realized at the end I had a mouthful of coffee through the whole thing and never swallowed.

1. A real life tragedy with a sad ending.
The tragedy which was never seen in the film was the ship's Captain McVay, who was unfairly scapegoated by the Navy for the sinking and committed suicide years later.

11. I think the movie was responsible for starting the process
that led to his eventual exoneration by Congress.

2. He gets the date wrong but it's still a great scene.
While not an entirely accurate "recollection" of the incident, Shaw's performance was brilliant.

4. Yeah, it's on my top ten list of best scenes ever. Robert Shaw at the top of his game.
That grinding voice and the ironic smirk... Chilling performance.

8. Yes, that was a special scene
I think my all-time favorite movie scene is the baptism scene at the end of The Godfather, but I think I might put that Jaws scene in my top 10 as well.

9. Weird you mentioned that
I was at the Chinese Naval museum yesterday and they have a hall where they keep gifts from other Navys. For some reason the USA gave them something with USS Indianapolis written on it.

12. There was two takes done for that scene. One when Shaw was sober and one where he was drunk.
They used the drunk one.

And yes, it's great scene in an already great film. :)
