Cliff Nobles & Co. - The Horse

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUHMrGx_jG0

Clifford James Nobles<2> was born in Grove Hill, Alabama, Nobles grew up in Mobile, Alabama,<3> and began singing in high school as a member of a local group, The Delroys. He moved to Philadelphia and recorded three singles for Atlantic Records, none of which charted. While living in a commune in Norristown, Pennsylvania, he formed a group, Cliff Nobles & Co., with bassist Benny Williams, guitarist Bobby Tucker, and drummer Tommy Soul. They recorded demos and, with the help of songwriter/record producer Jesse James, landed a recording contract with Phil-L.A. of Soul Records. Their second release for the record label was the single "Love Is All Right" b/w "The Horse", which featured the horn section from what would later be known as MFSB. "The Horse" was simply an instrumental version of the A-side, and Nobles, who was the lead singer, does not actually play on the track at all. Nevertheless, it caught fire at radio stations and became a hit, peaking at #2 for three weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968, as well as #2 on the Black Singles chart.<4> It was held out of the #1 spot by Hugh Masekela's "Grazin' in the Grass", on the week of 29 July 1968 - resulting in the extremely rare occurrence of instrumentals occupying both the #1 and #2 slots of the pop charts in the same week.<5> "The Horse" sold a million copies within three months of release, with the gold disc award from the R.I.A.A. made in August 1968.<3>
Nobles' record label continued releasing instrumental singles on which Nobles himself did not play a note, though a later single on which Nobles actually sang narrowly missed the R&B Top 40. An album credited to Cliff Nobles & Co., entitled The Horse, was released consisting mostly of instrumentals, and hit #159 on the Billboard Hot 200 album chart.<6> After his music career was over, Nobles worked in construction and later in the electricity generation industry.<2>
The material Nobles recorded for Atlantic has yet to see re-release.
Nobles died in Norristown, Pennsylvania in October 2008, at the age of 67.<1>

1. Brubeck's "Take Five"

Coolest instrumental ever---and in 5/4 time, for crissakes. Still sounds great, 50 years later; it was actually composed by Brubeck's sax man Paul Desmond---who donated all the royalties to the Red Cross. Class act, in every way.....

2. yeah, cool tune
Dave Brubeck - Take Five

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmDDOFXSgAs

my brother's jazz ensemble does this tune.

"Take Five" is a jazz piece written by Paul Desmond and performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet on their 1959 album Time Out. Recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studios in New York City on June 25, July 1, and August 18, 1959,<1> this piece became one of the group's best-known records, famous for its distinctive, catchy saxophone melody and use of the unusual quintuple (5/4) time, from which its name is derived.<2> While "Take Five" was not the first jazz composition to use this meter, it was one of the first in the United States to achieve mainstream significance, reaching number five on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Singles chart.
"Take Five" was re-recorded and performed live multiple times by The Dave Brubeck Quartet throughout the group's career. In addition, there have been various covers of the piece, including one by Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund in 1962 and a dub version by King Tubby, released posthumously in 2002. Some versions also feature lyrics, including a 1961 recording with lyrics written by Dave Brubeck and his wife Iola, sung by Carmen McRae. Al Jarreau performed an unusual and outstanding Scat version of the song in Germany in 1976. "Take Five" has also been included in countless movies and television soundtracks, and still receives significant radio play.
Upon his death in 1977, Desmond left the rights to royalties for performances and compositions, including "Take Five", to the American Red Cross, which has since received combined royalties of approximately $100,000 per year.<3>

4. I always liked that
Edited on Sat Aug-14-10 10:00 AM by Tuesday Afternoon
lyrics found

ay you want to be a rolling stone
Get your sail out in the wind
Get out on the highway and let 'er roll on
Roll on back to someplace you ain't never been
Hey, hey

When I was younger I was hard to hold
Seem like I was always goin'
Which ever way the wind would blow
Now that travelin' spirit calls me again

Callin' me back to where it all begins

Moon rise and sun go down
Turn my whole world around
Little star up in the sky
Tell my sweet baby please don't cry
Please don't cry

(SOLO)

Moon rise and sun go down
Turn my whole world around
Little star up in the sky
Tell my sweet baby please don't cry
Please don't cry

Travel out across the burnin' sand
Cross the ocean to some distant land
We'll reach the end we'll all be singin'
and we'll all be friends
Back where it all begins

Back where it all begins

11. I'm a huge fan of Lavilla Strangiato by Rush
And their performance in Rio in the late 90s is my favorite version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjglB04TOno

I especially love when Lifeson fires up the guitar at 3:25 in the middle of his solo.

I also like Lifeson's hilarious foray into jazz.

I like this one, too, because Lifeson goes off on Paris Hilton:

19.  "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" by Vince Guaraldi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADPgTmca6Zs&NR=1

Vince lived up the hill from me through the sixties. I often could hear him practice on warm days when his windows were open. The electric harpsichord sound carried all the way down the hill to the bay and beyond, the piano not so far.

"Cast Your Fate to the Wind" takes me places I'd like to visit again.

Now for fun, I give you Reg Kehoe and his Marimba Queens:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uc4yoIwGqOc

Keep an eye bass player, he's straight out of "Reefer Madness" central casting!

and that other one; incredible. Looked like he was rarin' to go play some rockabilly, (once rockabilly was born) I wonder if he ever did? And yeah, the Reefer Madness reference is apt. I always thought the scenes with the piano player were the most realistic ones in the whole movie. :smoke:

Nice that I'm not alone. I've a strong preference for Autumn on Ganymede, which contains dialogue if not actual lyrics, and therefore doesn't really apply to the theme.

My entry is from The Smiths, a tune called The Draize Train.

Always was a bit uncomfortable about this song and band name being kind of racist, but I have a Native American buddy here in NM who is also a musician, and in fact has played in legendary (in the southwest anyway) Native American rock bands. I've asked him about this and he finds it hysterically funny and loves this song. So, good enough for Willie Bluehouse, good enough for me.

61. Can't Take My Eyes Off You--Sungha Jung
A young Korean lad.
He's got a bunch of pretty arrangements of familiar songs. (and a website)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yxIyXpT9tQ&feature=related

Yeah, that's Tommy Emmanuel introducing him. They played together.

Also, he was the opening act for Mr. Big (containing super-shredders Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan) when they toured Korea.

I always say the best guitarists are over 40 or under 20 years of age.

QED.

Strangely, this has been played the buskers at several farmer's markets I've been to lately, so I always have to stop and listen.

68. Clapton's "Signe", all SRV instrumentals, Bach's Brandenburg Concertos 4/5/6 w/
Sir Neville Mariner, also Claude Bolling/Jean Pierre Rampal's "Picnic Suite" #5 (and #3).

One album/cd that I'm guessing doesn't qualify (because some songs include chants) is "Sacred Spirit: Chants & Dances of Native Americans". It's largely (but not exclusively) instrumental, but it immediately came to mind.

Gotta agree with Brubeck's "Take 5" but local stations over-played (NPR and KJZZ) for a while and I heard it so often I needed a break. Such a song doesn't deserve that - I'm definitely ready to hear it again now! : )

85. Link Wray - "El Toro"
The father of distorted guitar. He'd get a brand new amp and poke holes in the speaker cone with a pencil to get that fuzzy tone. Link recorded a couple of versions of this tune.

My band covers a version.

86. Link Wray - "Big City After Dark"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBvj3NkVp4M&feature=related

The sound of Link's guitar is the shizz. He is a huge musical influence on me as well as countless other guitarists.

The fact that he is NOT in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame says a lot about the corporate lameness of that outfit. His brothers should be in there as well. Especially Vernon for his drum work.

Not an instrumental tune but it completely changed my musical outlook when, as a teenager, I heard this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWQ9X-zG5Q8&feature=related

Most of my friends were listening to Air Supply and Men at Work at the time.

by Explosions in the Sky. They are amazing, all of their work, but this album might be my favorite. Not just of theirs, but of all time. It's absolutely take-your-breath-away gorgeous.
