I am glad Nikki had such a good family to love, that loved her back. :grouphug:

I'm sorry she had to go so soon.

We are worrying about when that day is coming for us.

We have a dog named Jack that is now 21 and a half years old! He will be 22 in November if he makes it that far. We are holding on to him and giving him love day by day at this point.

He has a slow growing cancer. He has one eye, and almost blind in it. His back legs are getting week. He is almost deaf. The cancer is pressing on his bladder, so he has to go to the bathroom a lot, and now goes in the house a lot.

But we love him and enjoy every day we get to have with him, so we follow him around and clean up after him every time he makes a mess. He can't help it. We give him lot of love repeatedly throughout the day, every day. We give him treats as much as he wants to keep his weight up.

He isn't in any noticeable pain from the cancer, but we give him a low level painkiller once a day as a preventive measure to keep him comfortable just in case, because dogs often hide their pain.

He's a very happy dog who loves to give kisses and wag his stubby tail and nuzzle us for constant ear rubs. So every day we hope we'll have him for just one more day.

16. Nikki was 8 or 9 years old
and she just suddenly got ill...the vet said some sort of autoimmune thing....it wa a shock to us...she was such a part of our family...your dog sounds wonderful . It is true its hard to tell when they hurt...we didn't catch Nikkis issues until this week.

18. That is terribly young...
Oh damn...

I am so terribly sorry. You should have had so much longer with her.

I wish all dogs could live as long as our oldest.

This long, long slow decline, and waiting day by day not knowing is agonizing. But we absolutely love every extra day that we have with him. It is absolutely worth all the extra stress and vet bills. I wish you had been given the choice. :(

15. How wonderful for Nikki that you were all there with her.
When I asked a vet if I could stay for the whole thing, he said "of course you can. The people who dump the pet here and run away leaving me to be the last thing they see break my heart and piss me off." You were there for her, and you were the last thing in her life. So sorry.

19. Condolences. It's hard to lose fur friends. 4 dogs on my culdesac have passed this summer.
Our old rescue German Shepherd Sandy , a neighbors old German Shepherd that he had from a pup, and another neighbor lost his two old dogs within two weeks of each other. Summer is hard on old dogs.

on DU, IMO, are the ones when folks loose their precious critters. You'll see your loved one at the Rainbow Bridge.
