OK I need some Lounge hugs and vibes.
Tuesday I'm going in for a hip joint replacement. The degenerative arthritis finally did its voodoo and I can't put it off any longer.

And no mods I'm not mooching around for medical advice, have plenty of that.

So starting Monday night, I'll be off line at least until next weekend.

Wish me luck; I'm going in.

I'm not scared, at best a touch nervous, mainly about the spinal. I don't do needles well.

Either it works or it doesn't. If it does, great. If not, deal with it.

I'll be back.

23. I have a friend who's had it ... runs in his family.
He's walked with a hitch for years ... he handled the entire thing very well.

Recovered relatively quickly. He stuck to his PT after and he says that was key.

And he is very, very happy that he had it done.

Good luck.

That's what I understand, keep on the PT to build up the muscle strength. I'm looking forward to getting back to walking more than a few feet at a time ... and the gardening.

27. Good deal .... I had a very unuslayy surgery a few years ago ...
I dislocated BOTH knees at the same time. Basketball. Snapped both patella tendons (they help hold the knee cap in place).

I spent ~4 weeks in a rehab faculty, in which, most of the folks were getting either a new knee, or a new hip. Most of them weer older than me ... I was 45. Most of them 60+.

I suspect that you are headed for a week at a rehab facility like the one I went to.

Some of the folks I saw there were emotionally "broken" ... its bad enough to be "physically" broken, but for some, the need for the new hip or knee seemed to pull them down emotionally. They saw the decline (which we all face).

But some, they were ready for the fight. And I could tell which was which, and so could the PT folks. A big part of their job was to get those who were emotionally broken to fight. And they liked the fighters, because they could pair them, create buddies who would work together.

Now ... my injury was a surprise. Sounds like you've known you need the new hip for a while.

I have small kids. So I needed to get out. They had told me initially that I'd be there in the rehab place for about 8 weeks. In a wheel chair for 2 or 3 ... and 8 weeks away from my kids??

Once I was there ... I began to plan my exit. What do I have to do to get home. Goals, goals, goals.

Some of the others ended up being there longer because they didn't try. They had no goals.

Others, I noticed "wanted out". They wanted to "get back to life". I'm not saying that anyone tried to find "short cuts". But my impression was that those who set goals did better and recovered faster.

It'll be tough. So set goals.

"I want to be able to shower standing up by date X" (that's a big milestone).
"I want to be able to go UP stairs one at a time by X"
"I want to be able to go DOWN stairs one at a time by Y" (this is harder so it is a different goal).

You mention gardening ... what physical positions do you have to be able to do to do your gardening?

Make a list, from those that were easy before, to those that were hardest. Then, us PT to help you set goals to get you there.

30. If all goes well, I'm told my PT will be out patient.
Either go to the hospital X number of days a week or the therapist comes to the house.

I'm well aware I'm getting old and the only thing that bothers about it is losing my independence and self sufficiency so I have the perfect goal. And no I won't try to cut corners. After the PT briefing I'll set specific goals.

Re gardening -- there's a lot of kneeing involved and of course walking, but by next spring either I'm back up to speed or not.

Thanks for the good advice
