I just ate pork by accident.
And I'm a Jewish pescetarian.

I didn't check the ingredients in the vodka sauce my dad bought and after I was done eating it with pasta, I saw that it had bacon in it. It was in really tiny little bits, and I couldn't tell.

Ugh. I know it was an honest mistake, but I still feel bad. :(

9. The thing is if you're a christian and you mess up ...
... you get punished. If you're jewish and you mess up, the whole community gets punished. That's where that guilt comes from.

3. well there is a verse from the New Testament which states,
loosely, it's not what goes into a man that defiles him, it's what comes out of him. It'll be ok.

4. you're too hard on yourself
trust me, the pig was already dead before you ate it, nobody suffered because you had a nice sauce...

if it's anyone's screw-up it's your dads since he made/bought the sauce

i'd like to see my dad cook me something more complicated than coffee, c'mon, he loves you, he's doing the best he can, it's just a human screw-up and no one at fault here really

8. Oh, and you had to post on a public forum, didn't you. This means
we have to report this to the rabbinical council, doesn't it?
They'll be over later to investigate.

...that religion has never stood between me and good food, or anything else for that matter. Smoked pork chops tomorrow night, of which I will gleefully consume at least three, four if my wife has only one. Hallelujah. Thanks.

It didn't occur to me that they might have pork in them, and I didn't ask. He still teases me about it. I know you feel bad, but God knows your intentions.

20. Been a vegetarian since 1977. Been the Rabbi's great-grandaughter since 1954
So on both counts, I say it's okay to forgive yourself. Drek happens sometimes, but ye shall be judged for long-term actions and intentions, not a few bumps in the road.

I was at a Mexican restaurant once with a guy I was really trying to impress, and stuffed a forkful of what I thought was cheese enchilada into my gob--only to find out it was loaded with ground beef. I must've turned 6 shades of green but managed to "remove" it without being disgusting. I realized then I couldn't control everything. A bit of flesh might infiltrate, but the only way you can prevent that is by living in a bubble and never eating food prepared by anyone else.

It's different than deciding to eat meat after a long time not doing it. I wouldn't even consider that--but I have friends who've done that and they suffered the worst indigestion of their lives!

23. A Jewish friend of mine once said this
"If I was king of the Jewish people, I'd make shrimp kosher"

True story.

I'm Jewish and I eat shrimp.

G-d hasn't struck me down yet.

I'm more of an atheist than a Jew.

27. What the Hell Kind of Question is That?
There is bacon flavored Vodka in the marketplace.

If you do not belong to a group with a pork prohibition, there is no thing as too much bacon.

26. Serious Question: Is There A Ritual Cleansing?
If you were Catholic, for example, you'd go to confession, and be assigned some kind of penance.

Is there something you do once you've eaten something that is not Koaher/Kashrut?

33. Do what they do in Israel -
call it the flesh of the unknown animal. No joke - a few years ago I was in Israel with my mom. At the breakfast buffet the first morning we were somewhat shocked to see bacon and ham being offered on the "meat" section of what claimed to be a kosher meal. Now, we're not Jewish and we are both carnivores, but still it was a bit weird. Our waiter was named Lev. In talking to him, he explained he was a secular Israeli Jew, although he did wear a yarmulke. We asked him about it, basically going, 'uh Lev, is that really, um, you know, ham, on the breakfast buffet?'. Lev just smiled and said, yes, it certainly was the flesh of the unknown animal and some Israelis really liked it.

It was an accident so don't be too hard on yourself. Forgive yourself.

40. This reminds me of a story...
A Priest and a Rabbi are having their weekly lunch together. The Priest says, "we've known each other a long time. May I ask you a personal question?"

"Of course," replies the Rabbi.

"Have you ever tried ham?". "Yes I have, just once. When I was young, out behind the synagogue on a dare from my classmates. Since we're getting so personal, let me ask you something, Father. Have you ever been with a woman?"

The Priest shifts uncomfortably in his chair, and finally replies, "Yes, once following a party that got out of hand shortly before I started seminary."

The two of them sit there in embarrassed silence for a minute.

Finally, the Rabbi looks up at the Priest and says, "Beats hell out of eating ham, doesn't it?"
