I have a confession to make, my fellow DU'ers. |
|
I guess I REALLY wouldn't want to live in a real cold area, at least not in the winter.
It's a case of when I like the IDEA, but not the REALITY. The idea of living somewhere where the summer temps don't get above 80 very often is appealing, but the reality of driving on black ice is somewhat less appealing.
The ideal would be to have two houses, like the snowbirds who come to FL in the winter and go back north in the summer. For most of us, alas, that's not feasible. :sigh:
(Of course, if I could live in Canada or Scandinavia, I could learn to live with the black ice, I guess, because of the social safety net, esp. national health care.)

are so smart. I was raised in West Texas so the icy stuff that comes around evey winter is something I've never gotten used to. Ice is a bad thing to try and drive on. :(

when I lived down there, that's what year-rounders called people who summered on the Jersey shore, and wintered in Florida... not a term of affection, I assure you

More of a return from self- imposed exile.... I forget what my name was in the old days:dunce:
I lived on the beach in Cape May County for years, until donny trump came and bankrupted most of the best engineering firms- most, including my boss, had to settle for $0.40 on the dollar or less when the fiberglass palace was finished. I miss the shore sometimes, but life has taken a turn for the better, and I can't complain

5. I like winter, primarily because it sucks. |
|
Huh?
In truth, when it's so cold outside that you're freezing inside your heated car and the windows won't stay defrosted, you have no enemies. Everyone around you is a fellow victim. No one wants anything except to reach their destination and get warmer. Inside the walls when it's freezing, you'd rather get along with everyone than go outside. There's a reason people are so nice up in Minnesota! It's cold! It's damn cold! My theory is that winter not only builds character, it builds camaraderie. Because it sucks. In places where it doesn't get cold, it's certainly possible for people who don't know one another to get along and have no enmity towards one another, but in places where it DOES get mighty cold every year, people have no choice but to get along for several months.
Of course, driving is much more treacherous, but that ultimately creates better drivers. I'm fond of winter.

8. I find I appreciate the coming of spring and warmth of summer more, living in northern Minnesota. |

I love winter -- winter sports, winter holidays, winter cooking and baking. And spring and summer are all the more welcome because of the hard winter. My lilacs and apple trees don't bloom until June.

is the opposite. I like the idea of living in a place with year 'round warm weather (my brother lives in Souther California, so I get a taste of it each year when I visit him), but I truly can't imagine living somewhere that doesn't have four distinct seasons. I love them all in their turn--even the dastardly cold, snowy, and icy one. What can I say? I'm a native Northeasterner.
