The thought of making Ice Tea...
Edited on Tue Aug-24-10 06:29 PM by AsahinaKimi
Would probably make my Asian ancestors cringe.

I don't get it. On a hot day, I always fill my glass with ice and add hot tea. It probably wouldn't work with real Green tea, but with Oolong or Chinese tea its wonderful. I used to make my own Thai Tea.

Here is a recipe:
Things You'll Need:
Chinese black tea (tea bags)
Cardamon
Splenda
Non Dairy Creamer or non fat Whipped Cream
Cinnamon

The best tea to use is Chinese Black tea which you can find in most
grocery stores. Tea bags are best, though if you enjoy using a Tea-ball and un bagged tea it will work. Boil hot water. When boiled pour water over tea bag and let steep.

You will have two different cups. One a coffee mug which you will ad a tiny pinch of Cardamom and a tiny pinch of Cinnamon to the cup. You can either put some non dairy creamer in the cup use a non fat whip cream. The other will be a glass full of ice.

Once the tea has steeped and is a full rich black color, poor into the cup with the powdered ingredients

I remember once making Ice Tea and my Korean grandmother would make a face..

"Don't put ice in it, you will ruin it!!!" She would say...

One time while she wasn't looking I slipped her a Thai tea. She looked at it and said,

"What is this?"

I said; "Just drink it Gram! I think you will enjoy it!"

She made a face and sipped it. Her face lit up, She loved it, until I told her it was Tea... pfft. But you know, she does have my mom make it for her once in a while. My mom had me emailed her the above mixture. On a hot day, I can't see drinking hot tea. Hot tea is great on a cool or cold day. But on a hot day...

I love ice tea! I can't think of any other countries, besides Thailand and the US that enjoy Ice tea so much. Can you?

1. Ice tea with lots of sugar and a twist of lemon is a Southern thing.
It goes well with unsweet cornbread and beans with ham hocks.

12. Funny, we always make our iced tea that way in New England and I have never heard it was
a Southern thing except within the last few years.

2. I love iced green tea.
It's wonderful stuff. :9

Of course, Oolong and Chinese black tea are great too. :)

There are very few teas aren't fantastic iced.

The only teas I don't like over ice are oily teas, like Earl Grey. :puke:

3. I love Thai tea, and will have to try your recipe, but
without the Splenda---I will use sugar. Do you have a recipe for Thai coffee? I love it and have found a way to make a substitute that is adequate, but always wondered how to make the real thing.

cardamom. I will have to try this.

5. In Canada, the default iced tea is sweetened.
One of my favorite things about travelling to the US (at least where we go) is the default is unsweetened. I much prefer unsweetened iced tea.

10. Clarifying recipe
My Thai Ice Tea:

Very simular tasting to real Thai tea however less the fat, sugar, and calories!

Once the tea has steeped and is a full rich black color, poor into the cup with the powdered ingredients along with your whipped cream. Transfer this to the glass of ice and enjoy!

11. The sanpin tea (from Okinawa) we ordered has a picture of iced tea on the box.
The importers kindly included instructions translated to English for both hot and iced tea.

13. I wish I liked tea, but I cannot stand it

I do not understand how people drink tea, hot or cold.

The last time I tried it was about a 1 1/2 years ago when I accidentally picked up my sister-in-law's tea thinking it was my drink, I took a big swig and was horrified with what I was tasting.

We have a cabinet at work with teabags, plates, forks, etc. If I need to go into that cabinet I have to hold my breath so I do not smell the tea, it is that bad for me.

To me it just literally tastes like dirty water, what is it about the taste that people like so much?

14. Odd...welcome to DU by the way. It never struck me as dirty water or anything
like that...I do like the flavor. There are so many different kinds, but I just stick with the regular ( black ) teas. When I make it ( and everyone loves my iced tea, I take it that seriously ) I like to throw in some lemon slices and just a tablespoon of frozen orange juice ( that is how my Mom made it, and everyone loved the stuff )

But some people don't like the taste of coffee...to each his own
