I can do to stop the critters? I chased them away once already.

5. Speaking of garbages - I had to haul a grapevine and a old bush
to the curb - it is a lot of work, and of course, it's cut down for kindling for anyone who wants to swing by and get 'em.

not much you can do, aside from waking up super early to put it out then.

Raccoons are good at getting around pretty much any barrier

8. My aunt had a midnight marauder in her trash recently so she had her son...
set a trap.

The result?

"Herzog" a young albino raccoon who was looking for noms in the wrong places.

Whitey Herzog was sent to an animal rehab center where he'll be among about 30 other coons who are living the high life, not having to worry about their next meal.

I have seen albino skunks and squirrels but never have seen albino racoons.

10. Wow
Herzog is pretty cool. I have never seen an albino raccoon.

I used to feed the baby raccoons around here, thought that they were cute little critters and felt sorry for them, especially the one who'd lost a leg in some freak accident. He was a nasty little devil. Then they all grew up to be a bunch of gangster raccoons, came around nightly, banging on the back door, howling for their food, and they weren't so cute anymore. They started to turn over the trash cans, no matter how much food I gave them, and terrorized the feral cats I feed, and just caused a huge mess. Well, I learned my lesson.

I don't feed em anymore. And they don't come around anymore. Don't know what ever happened to 3 Legs, I figure that nature took care of him. There's a fine line between taking care of nature and nature taking care of itself.

i don't know the legalities but if it was legal i might have been tempted to keep "hertzog" as a pet

that's just super cute...i've seen part albinos but never pure ones before didn't know they occurred in the wild

Once at the rehab center he will be tested for rabies, parvo, and raccoon roundworm. (Baylisascaris procyonis...I looked it up.)

33. Then I'm confused...
why would he be taken to a rehab center if he's OK?

Is there a law that if you trap a wild animal you have to turn it over?

37. He's actually lucky because he is young and was captured where he was.
Edited on Wed Aug-25-10 10:08 PM by MilesColtrane
If the state Wildlife Resources Agency had trapped him, they may have euthanized him.

I suppose she could have released him, but besides being a nuisance, raccoons have been known to attack cats, which she has. And, the version of roundworm they carry is particularly nasty and quite often fatal to humans.

Also, an albino nocturnal animal doesn't have much in the way of natural defenses against predators. He probably wouldn't have lasted very long in the wild.

You don't want to use much (wouldn't take much), it would be a waste of the finest hot sauce on the planet.

That will keep the damn things away, and if any of them are dumb enough to sample it they'll be bathing more than their food for a few days.

18. Racoons and cats and snakes, oh my.
Someone told us that if we have raccoons around we won’t have to worry so much about snakes. We have a lot of rattlesnakes and copperheads in this part of the world. So we feed the raccoons every night and we have not seen any snakes. We do have a cat that moved in and made his home in the crawlspace under the kitchen. We feed him as well and he seems to get along fine with the raccoons.

25. well give me the snakes any day
snakes don't carry illnesses i can catch and to be honest i have never seen a wild rattlesnake in my yard in the 'burbs

copperheads yah but copperheads are so passive they don't do us anything

raccoons have done me plenty, starting with killing my chickens...and killing well...one bad year they killed EVERYONE'S hobby chickens and other small outdoor pets that i knew...

that has never happened w. copperheads, i know in theory they're poison but in reality they can't be arsed

(i live in louisiana, may be diff in other states, for example, no one in my state has EVER been killed by an alligator but it's a frequent occurrence in florida and i'm not sure why)

35. We also have coyotes in this area.
My girlfriend and I are sorry about your chickens but we are both frightened of snakes. We have had them get in the house on two occasions. No one lives here but the two of us and although they were just blacksnakes we had to call the sheriff’s department to come and get them out both times. We have a small television in the kitchen and believe it or not we have actually witnessed raccoons setting outside the kitchen window and watching it.

20. Spray ammonia in the garbage bags. They will leave it alone.
Do you have it just in bags, or in a can? Are you allowed to use cans? We have containers here and I have no problems, but used to have to just put out bags, and the ammonia works great.

23. in my humble experience there's NADA you can do
Edited on Wed Aug-25-10 07:58 PM by pitohui
except put out the trash in the morning, most (but not ALL) raccoons are nocturnal

don't do anything to encourage them, don't feed them, don't tell 'em they're cute, don't put your outdoor dog/cat food where a raccoon can take a cut, just don't do it, otherwise you're truly effed because raccoons 1) have a memory and 2) apparently create draglines to check out spots where they've had "wins" in the past

a dedicated raccoon can make your life hell if you're not allowed to shoot him

"i chased them away once already" that's cute, i wish i was back in the day where i thought "i chased them away once already" would give a raccoon a clue

wait...THEM? you have a tribe/family, you're already fucked

you just have to wait and put the trash outside at the last possible moment in the morning, which i hope for your sake occurs in the daylight

and never leave food out, never, and if you see a warbler nest (which is "food" to a raccoon) you might even consider putting a "baffle" on it so the raccoon won't come back to steal the eggs/babies next year...

raccoons are attractive and physically handsome but they eat birds, gardens, garbage, dog food, etc and just cause a lot of problems so it's my theory i NEVER encourage them to hang at my place

a friend used to feed raccoons, and then the raccoons got so bold they knocked on her door! IN DAYTIME! i was there several times to witness it myself

my friend moved because otherwise she would get no peace

bricks on tops of lids, it is to laugh, sad to say, in my area, that was disproved by me personally in or about circa 92 :-) and i don't mean 2192 or 2092, i mean 1992 when us dinosaurs ruled the earth!!!

38. Cover your garbage with your scat.
Edited on Wed Aug-25-10 10:08 PM by Kaleva
Many animals in the wild do this to deter others from eating their food. Another option is to spray the garbage with your urine (do this outside and not in the home). This marks the garbage as being your territory and may or may not ward off the raccoons.

While the above methods may or may not work, it will surely gain you a visit from someone who has the authority to restrict your freedom. Another possible benny is one of your neighbors may capture the moment on video and post it on Youtube thus making you famous.

Note: I've worked long today. Ache like hell and am feeling quite silly.
