Dieters/doctors/nutritionists, have you ever heard this claim?
That drinking 1/2 your weight in ounces of water (i.e., 140 lbs = 140 oz) will help you lose weight?

That's how much I would have to drink. That's 1.09375 gallons. No freakin' way.

2. That sounds like it could be dangerous
I think it could upset one's electrolyte balance and cause heart problems. Even if it wouldn't though I think I'd just cut calories and up exercise.

3. BV, that's crazy talk. Sounds like a good way to end up in the hospital on IV's.
Do a diet and exercise thing- I have had great success with Atkins, and my wife with Weight Watchers...and we both go to the gym several times a week. AFAIK, NONE of those gimickey things works at all - this one could actually be dangerous. Sometimes the old ways are best.

5. Too much of ANYTHING is bad for you.
people can actually drown/damage organs from drinking too much water. Ignore that Bertha. What I heard recently is if you drink a glass or two of water before eating...that will help you lose more weight.

Water intoxication (also known as hyper-hydration or
water poisoning) is a potentially fatal disturbance
in brain functions that results when the normal
balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside
of safe limits by over-consumption of water.

7. a gallon in 24 hours
is actually recommended if you are out working or hiking in the heat (that is what they warn the migrants coming across the desert) but I would be careful of salts getting too diluted and having to pee all the damn time.

You and I both know, it's eat less, move more. Other than surgery there is just no magic. sigh

diets and that's assuming normal activity. Working out heavily, running, etc, probably
wise to hydrate more.

Hubby and I have just started Nutrisystem--it will be a week tomorrow that we're on it--
and I've lost 4 lbs already. I walk the dog for 35-45 minutes every morning and again for
about 15 minutes at night.

We have not been hungry. Lots of chocolate--in either breakfast things, lunch bars, and desserts.
You supplement with salads, fruits, fresh veggies, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.

I did Nutrisystem prior to my hip surgery three years ago and was very happy with results.
Then our house burned down and with all the stress, I paid no attention to eating or drinking (wine, cocktails) and regained the weight.

Now that we're rebuilding, I want to move (probably February)in at my goal--which is to lose 35 lbs--and I think that I can probably get there before Thanksgiving.

I've done South Beach--works but requires too much grocery shopping and cooking--and Atkins--which left
me hungry all the time--and even Scarsdale used to work for me when I was 30 years younger.

I think with more than 10 lbs to lose it's a good idea to find a diet that keeps you full and not feeling deprived. Nutrisystem does that for me. Once I get to my goal, I am not going back to cocktails/wine every night or so much meat/potatoes. It means eating better, really, which in the long run is good.

On edit: The silver Nutrisystem plan works out to about 1200-1300 calories a day for women--and again, I have not been hungry on it.

10. I've read that too
but your math is a little fuzzy there, 140 pounds would equal 70 oz. or just over a gallon of water a day.
Weight Watchers recommends between 48 and 64 oz of liquids a day.

12. Drinking two cups of water before each meal seems to facilitate weight loss
per the study described below. Note that the participants were already eating a low-calorie diet; the water consumption increased the amount of weight lost.

a gallon and a half of water a day though but for totally different reasons. I have to, to stay hydrated.

16. Too much water can kill you.
It's called water intoxication. You'd have to drink at least 1 to 1-1/2 quarts per hour, which is more than most people can excrete. Your sodium balance gets all screwed up and you get sick and die.
