The oldest kitty in the world (w/ a couple of pics)
Edited on Wed Aug-25-10 11:09 AM by WilliamPitt
I was 18 years old, a senior in high school and looking down the barrel of college, when my mom decided we needed another cat. Our house had dealt with a rampaging bout of feline leukemia that had heartbreakingly cleared the house of cats, the last having died a year or so before, so it was time, and it felt safe. She went out to get a cat, and came home with a tiny brown flying monkey.

It was an Abysinnian, a beautiful tan shorthair with bright yellow eyes, and the thing could fly. It was able to jump from the floor to the molding above the door in a single bound, it ran like the wind, and in the nature of the breed, it loved water. I would be in the shower, and *splash*, there was kitty. The fellow we got it from said it was male, and since I was in the grips of a mad bout of jazz fever, I named him Miles.

Our previous cats were all indoor/outdoor, which I believe was the main reason why they developed leukemia (from other cats out there), so we assiduously kept Miles inside. One day during the last part of my Junior year of college, Miles got out. He came back the next day...and a few months later, he had five kittens. When we realized she was pregnant, we built her a little nest upstairs. The day came, and my mom and I sat at the kitchen table smoking like a couple of chimneys...I swear to God, we were a caricature of the expectant dad in the waiting room. Suddenly we hear this little "Mew!" and there in the kitchen was Miles, in labor, looking at us as if to say, "What the f--k are you doing down here?!" She insisted we be with her, so we led her back upstairs, and I rubbed her back as she gave birth. The third of her five is in the second picture below.

Oops. Miles kept "his" name, because it was too late, but from then on, whenever anyone said "Good boy" to her, I had to explain the...um...error of her name.

Miles has stayed with my mom ever since. When she moved to New Hampshire, Miles went with her, a tiny purring companion who could always run and jump like an Olympic athlete. She was, quite completely, the most perfect lap cat in history. She'd jump into your lap and stare up at you with those yellow eyes as if to say, "Well? Get to scratchin'!" In the fall, she would blend in with the leaves on the ground and simply disappear...until you heard the moles in their death throes out in the yard. Oh yes, she was a mighty hunter, and remains so to this day; the last time I saw her, just two weeks ago, she was hopping down the back stairs of my mom's place with a mouse in her mouth.

I'm almost 39 now, and Miles is knocking on the door of 21. My mom wrote yesterday to tell me Miles' kidneys are failing, and she has a tumor in her mouth. The vet made her comfortable, and she seems to be doing OK for now, but it is all too clear that the end is coming for her. I was on the fly when I got my mom's message; I had to run a bunch of moving-oriented errands, hit the grocery store, write an article, proof some others, make dinner, and then hit my night job. I got home from work around 4am, sat on the couch, thought about Miles...and promptly burst into tears.

This time of year is nuts for my wife and I, and with moving in a week to boot. But I'm going to try to sneak a day trip to New Hampshire as soon as I can, to say one last goodbye to the oldest kitty in the world. I'll bet my boots she'll have a mouse in her mouth when I get there.

Good kitty.

15. Lovely tribute to a
beautiful cat. When you have shared so much of your life w/ long lived companions it is always difficult. My daughters cat was just shy of 19 when he died. My son's dog just passed 14. My son always hesitates when some one asks how old his dog is. I know he doesn't want to think about it.

so sorry that she has serious health problems in her advanced years.
Miles' son reminds me of my wonderful large cat, Mr. Ticket, except he had a tabby's black stripes.

I love your story about Miles. When I was a kid, our old family friends had a cat named Walter who had kittens. When their 4-year-old son was told by the older devout Catholic woman babysitter, "God gave Walter her little kittens", he replied, "No, he didn't, they came out of her butt!!!"
That boy's older sister, my dear friend, had a young male cat who was struck by a car on their very rural road in New Hampshire while I was visiting. He was returning from the marsh across the road with a mouse in his mouth. We buried him with the mouse, like a little Pharaoh taking something to eat in his afterlife.

I hope Miles has a gentle transit to her next nine lives.

She's a gorgeous ruddy. I bet she's soft as a rabbit, too.

Kidney failure is process in cats and Abys are stubborn. She may have more time. If you or your mom have questions about subQ or other care for kidney cats, I'd be glad to answer (I'm a kidney pt myself and have cared for many kidney cats).

Best wishes to you all.

26. The tumor in Miles's mouth is probably because of the kidney failure. When
their kidneys start to go, all other functions start to break down too, and they develop all kinds of health problems.

I had a beloved Siamese cat that went into kidney failure. For five months, I gave him daily intravenous saline treatment and that kept him alive for that short time longer.

But every week he had some new ailment that had to be treated and he grew visably weaker every day. I often wonder if I did the right thing in prolonging his life. But it was hard to let him go.

My sympathies to you and your mom (especially your mom) in what will be a hard time.

30. Hey Will. Wonderful memories! You forgot to mention that when
we were watching Miles birth her kittens, Gypsy, our most wonderful Black Lab-Collie, was sitting right with us. We were barely 2 feet away. You kept wanting to pick up and shake the kittens because you thought they were dead. Miles brought them all to life.

Also, you forgot that when the kittens were about 4 weeks old I came home from work one day and the kittens were all sucking on Gypsy. Miles was sitting up on my bureau just observing and getting a well needed rest. One of her kittens sucked on Gypsy for months. Somewhere I have pictures of that!

34. I had a 21 year old cat too.
Your post has me in tears.. give Miles a pet for me and wish her safe passage. She lived a good long life, and was beloved and cared for.

About a month after I turned 4, my mom, older brother, myself, and my great grand parents piled into the car and went to my mom's friend's house to pick up a kitten. The friend's kids were severely allergic, so they couldn't keep her. She was a a tiny bit of snow white fluff, looks like a Turkish Van somewhat in coloring, who had been dropped in a grocery store parking lot in North Pole AK. It was cold and raining when the friend picked her up. We named her Patches, because she was blinding white with carmel and black splotches all over her. From the very beginning, she was absolutely fearless. My uncle's very well trained black lab/German Sheppard mix was sniffing her and trying to eat her food one day, and there she was making these tiny squeaks and hitting him with her dime sized foot. Priceless. She made it through two moves, a dog and two other cats. She tolerated my dad and brother ok, but she latched onto my mom at first, and then me too when I was older. She hated kids. Wasn't scared, but would hiss and bite, because most kids came at her too roughly. She got one friend of mine, who was being cruel, right across the eyeball with her claw. Served the little s*it friend of mine right. She was a great comfort to my mom when she had radiation and chemo. Wasn't thrilled when we brought another cat home and she was 8 yrs old, in fact jumped the fence and tried to run away. I'm out in the yard looking for her and I hear dogs barking the next yard over. Here she came back across the fence, hell bent for leather for back door. When that cat passed from kidney failure, Patches grieved for her. She was 19.

We always joked about how she ruled the house, 6 lbs of fluff who had the ability to look up at you and down her nose at you at same time. She boxed ears, bopped with her toes, and generally kept you in line. She would also come to you if you were sick or not feeling well, and keep you company, AFTER she licked all of the menthol rub off of your chest. When we had a cold snap one January, and it was in the minus 30 range at night, she would wake me at 4am, digging at the edge of my blankets and making this sort of soft grunt as she butted her head into mine. As in "I'm COLD and I want under the blankets NOW." She would too... curl up next to you and purr like a fiend.

I moved out of the house in 2004 when I was 25. June of next year, my parents called my cell and left me a message. Patches had been, finally, slowing down the past six months. I always told her she was my great gran incarnate, who lived to be 90. My mom's message said that they had found her, the night before, laying on the stairs meowing quietly, and my mom knew this was probably it. The night they called, they found her curled up in her litter box, howling, and scared. My parents had her put down that night, and called me after. It was the day after her 21st birthday. I grieved that I wasn't there to hold her one last time and say goodbye, but I know she knew I was thinking of her.

It's extremely difficult when you have a pet for such a long time, because they are such a fixture in our lives, and it's hard to imagine what it's like without them. It gets easier. Over time the memories don't choke me so much, but instead make me laugh. I pray it is the same with you and your mom, when you think of Miles.

May we see them all again someday, waiting for us at the rainbow bridge.

42. WP - we also have a long history with pets, especially felines. Two cats joined us waaay
back in college (70-74) - one lived to 21 years. Rhesus also spent her last years with my parents because they had AC and summers were just too hot for the cats without it.

We currently have an 18-year old who is fading, but not too severely yet. Tigger seems to have feline Altzheimers - she often just sits and stares at nothing, as if she cannot remember where she is or what she is doing. But, her weight is OK and she is in no distress. She still purrs when petted and held. I "groom" her now because she does not clean herself as well as she used to, but we both seem to enjoy it.

I have "accompanied" several of our non-human family members out of this world - I hope it was comforting to them to be held (sometimes for hours) at the end.

Family members, especially the non-humans, bring so much to our lives. It is the least we can do to take care of them while they thrive and be as gentle and loving as we can when they leave us. Our last cat also had kidney problems, though he had three good years at the end (of his 16 years) because we took extra special care (including sub-cute fluids). He died in his sleep, where he always slept - between us in bed.

Definitely make that trip to say goodbye. And thank you for being a caring person. Not everyone is.

43. Animals...aren't they wondrous things? Funny thing is..I used to hate cats
couldn't stand the things...always sneaky and vindictive and only came to you when they wanted something. We've had dogs growing up, and one cat ( which my Mom couldn't stand, and the thing caused plenty of trouble ) so I was reluctant to allow a cat in my current apartment when one of my roommates said he wanted one.

He brought her home, and everyone ( including myself ) fell in love with her

I'll try to post pics if I can, but the cell phone camera I have now seems to have issues uploading images

to Miles and her family, feline and human. Last year we lost our beloved Mr. Christmas, a flamepoint Siamese, after 17 years, 7 with diabetes. I miss him every day. Even when you know you took good care of them, had a wonderful long life beyond the average cat span, and they weren't feeling top notch at the end, still you long for more years. Good Kittie!

One of our dogs is more than a year older than the "oldest dog in the world" as recorded by the current Guinness book of world records. But the vet who had his birth records went out of business a few years ago, so we can't definitively prove his birth date. He is 21 years old, and will be 22 years old in November if he's still with us.

I wonder how many other dogs and cats out there are living so long. Is this becoming more common? Less common?

If you are going to celebrate your cat's age in some way then I hope you have access to all of your cat's original vet records. And then, I hope it's one hell of a celebration! :)
