Rolling Stone - Top 10 Songs - Beatles
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 09:50 AM by Steely_Dan
No. 1 - A Day In The Life

I couldn't agree more.

#1: "A Day in the Life"

The ultimate Lennon-McCartney collaboration, "A Day in the Life" wasn't recognized as the band's masterwork until the Eighties, after Lennon's death. It pairs lyrics inspired by the newspapers and Lennon's own life with McCartney's idea to have classical musicians perform what producer George Martin called an "orchestral orgasm."

1. But a "Top Ten Beatles Songs of All Time" list is nothing more than a display of ignorance
The Beatles were about "the whole enchilada."

Sure, people have their favorites, but "Top Ten Beatles Songs of All Time?"

The fact that "I Am The Walrus" isn't on the list leads me to one conclusion...that list was written by someone in Al Quaeda.

2. Yesterday? Hey Jude? Let It Be?
These are not the best Beatles tunes. None of these three would make my top twenty, let alone top ten.

A Hard Day's Night, Paperback Writer, She Loves You, Day Tripper: we all know every word to these songs. Yesterday is frankly awful by comparison.

4. Well, Clearly...
...you appreciate the earlier works (Phase I) of the Beatles. That's cool.

The reason why I think "A Day In THe Life" is deserving of the best Beatles song is many fold.

Basically though...
ADITL demonstrates some of the best musicianship of the four. It is particularly true of Ringo's drumming. John's vocals are excellent. And...the song was a departure for them.

3. In Houston there's a bar that does a Beatle's Open Mic nite every Wednesay
Lot of people way too young to remember the Beatles show up to sing their faves. Probably the best night's free entertainment since they invented sex.

6. The Beatles revolutionized music with two things: Their use of Stereo sound and their....
often used sardonic lyric. Neither which is represented well in these
Rolling Stone choices.

19. "I Saw Her Standing There" was on the B side of the only Beatles record
I owned while they were together ("I Wanna Hold Your Hand" was on the A side). I probably listened to the B side 20 times as much as the A side. And it's still my No. 1 Beatles song.

And "Penny Lane" always takes me back to skating parties at the local rink circa 1967.

Then there's "Eleanor Rigby". I almost always think of it when I see masses of workers walking from the station to their offices here in Tokyo.

10. I appreciate the homage paid to George Harrison's guitar work from the Rolling Stone
article. George was sometimes criticized unfairly for his not in the blues groove guitar.
Thing was The Beatles were a pop and rock band who would define their own sound and influence others...

12. I wouldn't put "Come Together" in the top fifty, much less the top ten
"Hey Jude" should be much higher, and E. Rigby should be on the list.

13. Personally, I love Sgt Pepper's but I think it's overrated.
The Brit versions of Help, Rubber Soul, and Revolver are the greatest collections of Beatles' songs ever. Any list of their best that doesn't include "In my Life" wasn't written by a true fan.

Also, to this day Abbey Road just floors me as to how amazing it is. Especially Side 2 (Sorry, young ones. It's all in the vinyl.)
