New refrigerator nightmare
Edited on Wed Sep-01-10 09:01 AM by uncommon

So I moved into a new apartment over the weekend, and we had to get a fridge as it didn't come with one. Enter boyfriend's lovely parents - they offer to pay for the fridge as a gift. We say okay, they go to Best Buy and pick up a floor model LG side-by-side with a bottom drawer freezer - absolutely beautiful, nicest fridge I've seen in awhile.

It was supposed to be delivered the day we moved in - that was Saturday. Boyfriend calls Best Buy on Friday to confirm delivery time - is informed that delivery has been rescheduled for MONDAY. First nightmare - no fridge for 2 days. But there is a convenience store very close to the house so we figure, we can get by just fine.

Monday - fridge is delivered. Delivery guy hooks it up, smiles and leaves. I pick up $80 worth of groceries on my way home, yay.

Arrive at apartment - hear boyfriend in heated conversation upstairs, wonder what is wrong.

Enter apartment - boyfriend is on the phone with Best Buy - the fridge has been running for about 8 hours and does not seem to be functioning properly. Freezer temp button doesn't work. Delivery guy broke banister and covered it up and didn't say anything.

Food spoils, wasted $80 after major moving expenditures, = broke.

Best Buy's solution - just return the fridge and get another one, but it will not be at the same price because we got the floor model at a steep discount.

Boyfriend - hell no, that's ridiculous.

Best Buy - fine, then we can have someone come out and fix it and fix the railing the delivery guy broke. In 2 days.

Ugh.

They were supposed to call between 7 and 9 this morning to tell us when they are coming to fix it - no call.

This is all bad enough, but I have a 6 year old daughter who really likes to eat food. Ugh.

1. It happens. Life involves a number of risks, and this is one of them.
Buying things, moving, all involve risks. Buying things online, or even in a store where they deliver involves risk. A number of times I get a truck and pick an item up myself. If possible. I just ordered something, the box was sent to me ... empty. Nothing in it. Hopefully they will make it right.

3. I was very patient about it for the first few days - it has now been 6 days this has been going on..
and there is no guarantee it will be corrected. No refrigerator when it is 95 degrees outside is not acceptable.

2. It gets better!
They didn't call - boyfriend called them - they are coming between 4 and 8 PM. And on top of that they don't carry ANY parts, so if we need parts for the repair, it will be another god knows how many DAYS.

I am never shopping at Best Buy again.

4. I'd be telling them
You have 24 hours to either repair or replace with same model. If it is NOT done by then my next communication with you will be through my attorney and it will cost you a lot more.

5. A friend of mine has an LG side-by-side w/freezer on the bottom
and she has had nothing but trouble with it since purchase.

8. That sucks --
it really is beautiful and it's a great design looks and storage wise, but if it doesn't work soon I may rip out my own hair.

6. Contact their corporate offices and raise hell.
That is what I would do.

10. UPDATE:
The refrigerator is not repairable. Best Buy said earlier that they would replace it if this was the case.

They are now refusing to replace it.

I will never shop there again. What shoddy business practices.

11. Contact the Better Business Bureau and your State Attorney General
Raise hell by contacting their corporate office through phone calls AND written letters every week until they resolve the issue.

13. Wow. How crappy of them! Thanks for sharing your difficulties here. I will be in the market for
a bunch of new appliances. Their company will not be getting my business, that's for sure!

I hope you get a new, working fridge and some justice soon!

Implied warranty of merchantability applies. If they don't make it right post haste, file a complaint with the BBB.

Some interesting comments on the your LG here. Looks like a product to avoid.

17. That's the only option now -- and we have to fight them for the refund for
all the ruined food - there is a section in the warranty about it.

19. So it seems - I didn't pick it out or I would have done the homework.
Still very frustrating though.
