The doctor told my cousin that he is going to die
He has been a chronic alcoholic for the past 15 years with periods of sobering up here and there. He is comatose and only awakens to take pulls of his bottle of whiskey. He got a puppy this last time he sobered up and now he is being neglected and peeing and shiting everywhere because my cousin is out cold.So my aunt gets a new dog. Wonderful.

He's got the family addiction gene really bad, way worse than me. Now he is drinking himself to death. I feel like doing what carol oconner suggested you do with addicts....lock him up..I have a spare bedroom in my apartment above my grandparents.. we could seal the windows and fortify the door and lock him up until we can convince him there is life after soberiety.

We would never do that of course, someone would end up arrested, but it would be the only thing we could do to save his life.
Being in a nursing home (rehab) strapped down to a bed for a month after having his gall bladder taken out didn't convince him.

My aunt and grandparents would be crushed if todd passes. This just sucks.

Thanks for reading my post.

2. I'm sorry Roon
That does suck.

No, locking up your cuz is not the answer, although it's the instinct. I feel badly for your aunt and grandparents and the puppy, but reality is that your cousin has made his choice, and if a doctor's assessment doesn't make him change his ways, and he's had chances in the past, it won't make a difference. Give him support, tell him you're there for him (if you're able to be, it's a big responsibility), tell him that you're working through it yourself, but in the end, it's his choice.

You have a new lease on life yourself, so take care of yourself and your partner first. JMHO.

4. Go over and take the dog.
Don't allow a family member to neglect a puppy. That's not even right. Let's not let the dog get pay for the guy's addiction issues.

5. geez roon, must be troubled cousin week on DU --
just posted about mine.

Part of the problem is PAYING for rehab. In my cousin's case, a very wealthy friend who's big into AA offered to put her in the Pasadena Recovery Center for 90 days and wrote the check to them on the spot, yesterday, when she checked in.

Miracles do happen, Roon. Somehow I think you'll be instrumental in one, soon.

Get him to an ER.

Understand your desire to lock him up, but it appears he needs professional medical help.

Detox can lead to seizure, stroke, heart attack if he's that far gone. Don't risk it.

You're a kind and sweet man, Roon. Best to you, Todd, and all who love him.

Keep us posted; PM me if you like.
