Today's College Football and Tailgate Thread
College football season is finally here! :woohoo:

It’s the first week of the season, so most of the top-ranked teams are playing fairly easy games. There are only two games between ranked teams today: #24 Oregon State plays #6 TCU at Cowboys Stadium and #21 LSU plays #18 North Carolina at the Georgia Dome. Boise State (ranked 3rd) and Virginia Tech (10) also play each other, but not until Monday.

Also a couple of rivalry games: the “Arch Rivalry” (Missouri vs. Illinois in St. Louis) and the “Rocky Mountain Showdown” (Colorado vs. Colorado State at Mile High Stadium).

My Sooners play Utah State today--alas, I can’t watch it because it’s on pay-per-view and my cable provider isn’t carrying it. But there are plenty of other games to watch (and, of course, a hot grill and cold beer). There’s bound to be a few other games that wind up being good as well—usually the first week of the season brings at least one or two upsets. And even if there isn’t, well, at least it’s football season again.
:bounce:

So what games are you looking forward to today?

5. heh -- I can relate
I used to live about three blocks from Owen Field in Norman, OK--all the neighborhood streets and most of the yards would be lined with cars. Worse, our neighborhood only opened out in two directions, and both streets that it opened two were arteries to the stadium, so traffic was backed up on each street for hours before and after every game.

The one advantage for my friends and neighbors who weren't interested in football was that all the city's stores, restaurants (other than sports bars), coffee shops, movie theaters, etc. were completely uncrowded during game time--if they could get to them ...

4. Miami of Ohio scores first against Florida
Gators fumbled a snap giving Miami the ball at the Florida 25 or so. Miami couldn't move the ball at all, but they did make their field goal. :bounce:

13. Florida's offense looks horrible today
They're ahead 21-9, but one of their TDs was an interception return and another was a 2-yard drive after an INT. Their longest scoring drive has been 21 yards.

But they're moving the ball now ...

9. The story is that UNC has the delusion they can have a decent football program
It was fueled by the Mack Brown anomaly.

Even he realized that UNC would never be a nationally prominent team so he got the hell out of Dodge.

So they resorted to hiring some sleaze-bag Jimmy Johnson protege.

They should just be satisfied with all the national championships they win in women's soccer and hoops.

41. Observations
Florida and Oklahoma might be overrated.

Utah is definitely underrated, as usual.

The SEC West is going to be a great four way fight between Arknasas, LSU, Alabama, and Auburn.

Houston Nutt is in for a very, very long year.

43. Jack Crowe at Jax St. finally got his....
You guys might remember back in 1992, he resigned at Arkansas after losing to I-AA Citadel on the season opener. And now, he hands the same type of punch-in-the-gut loss to Coach Nutt at Ole Miss.

In other news Arkansas manhandled Tenn. Tech to the tune of six touchdowns. I think it ended 44-3. If we can get by Georgia in two weeks, and Alabama in three, we might have a shot this year.

Hey Jon, I've seen a few people on one of the OU boards who are convinced that Erickson will be done after this year and that ASU will hire Mike Leach as their new head coach. They're clueless and/or full of it, generally speaking-- but how hot is the hot seat for Erickson this year?

and I hope not.

His problems was accuracy problems with starting quarterbacks and loss a few close games. Defensively they held Matt Barkley to one of his poorer showings. However Andrew Luck burned them as well as the Oregon QB of last year. However they were within the top 25 in defensive YPA last season and it was mostly freshmen and 1st year starters. Arizona St hired an offensive coordinator this season when last season Erickson was calling plays offensively. So we will see how that goes.

He did split a Pac-10 title with USC with Erickson so I'm confident in his ability. I forgot to mention he has done well in recruiting a Vontaze Burfict was the #1 highest rated linebacker out of high school, choose ASU over USC last year.

BTW, get a load of these scoring drives of tonight's game. :D

Cameron Marshall rushes for 70 yards, scores TD.

Cameron Marshall rushes for 38 yards, scores TD.

Steven Threat (first game EVER) completes pass for 28 yards, scores TD.

This is, what, his fourth season? It'll be fun to see how Burfict develops between last year and this. And it looks like maybe they've got talent on offense too.

The only thing working against Erickson, I think, is that the PAC 10 seems so wide open right now, and if schools like Washington, Stanford, and (especially) Arizona (all of whom finished below ASU two years ago) solidify their positions in the top division I could see people getting impatient. But that's only my perspective from a distance, of course.
