Mad Men, "The Suitcase"--thoughts? (expect spoilers) |
|
I was totally blown away. It was like watching a one-act Broadway play. The writing was top-notch--funny, touching, dramatic, and, most important, tighter than tight--and as a writer myself, I respect that immensely. The relationship between Don and Peggy has always been intriguingly complex, but last night's stuff really cemented them as equals. Of course, now this will give rise to "Don + Peggy" speculation, but I think their relationship is deeper than that--father/daughter, boss/employee, friends, sharers of secrets.
So, so impressive. :applause:

2. It was riveting. I sat through the first airing at 10pm, and then |
|
sat through the immediate repeat at 11. I couldn't tear my eyes away. Fantastic show. The "Tom and Lorenzo" guys always give a good post-show rundown if you're interested: http://tomandlorenzo2.blogspot.com/2010/09/mad-men-s4e7-suitcase.html

4. I'm still thinking about it - and it's 24 hours later! |
|
So many moments in that hour I can't even begin to discuss. I needed a cigarette afterward - and I don't smoke! :D
One of the best episodes so far. Pretty good for their 4th year.
Just give Jon Hamm and Elizabeth Moss their Emmys now, everybody else go home. ;)

It wasn't a two-character play in the purest sense but it came pretty close. I simply adore a good two-character play.

7. That Episode Is A Prime Example of Why It's The Best Drama on TV |

They don't rely on pure mamipulation like a hospital or police drama. They don't have a big gimmicks. It's all about the personal relationships of the characters and their growth, or lack thereof, as people.

9. I love all the different layers... |
|
It's like a great classic novel with all the different themes and symbolism. It's so richly detailed. I love how something will seem huge and then we never really see anything about it again and then something that was almost a throw-away line will end up having huge significance.

8. Yes it's a big brother little sister relationship. But honestly... Don is still Don |
|
He didn't hit on Peggy cause it's work and he has "rules". They made it clear he was lying there. He didn't hit on her cause she's not in his league. Neither was that teacher chick from season 2, but we all make mistakes. Don especially.
I do like it how he really sees potential in her. It's like he knows everybody but himself.

10. "There's a way out of this room we don't know about." |
|
That line scared me, as I knew what he was referring to. The way out the window and on to the pavement.
The beginning credits look a little more ominous now that Don is talking that way.

I didn't even think of that, but you're right.
I guess I was thinking of it from a different point of view.
