I'll be headed out to Portland, Oregon later tonight |
|
Edited on Wed Sep-08-10 01:12 PM by Tobin S.
It will be my first trip to Oregon since I started driving long haul again. Pays good, $1.40 a mile for about 2200 miles, and it runs to a portion of the country that I like to go to the best this time of year, the great American northwest.
I can't wait to get out to Jubitz, a famous truck stop there in Portland. They have large bar there with live music. If I get a layover there and you come in to see me, I'll be the chubby dude with a buzz cut and bib overalls doing some line dancing and yelling, "Yeehaw!" Wait a second, that's what half the guys in there look like. Give me a PM and I'll send you my number so we can hook up. :)

I go to Portland fairly often, but won't be there in the coming weeks.
Have a great time!

4. You know I didn't even think of the double meaning when I posted the OP |
|
But that was pretty funny I guess. I have made use of the edit function and maybe my meaning is a little clearer now.

5. I thought it was great! I knew that wasn't what you meant, but |
|
love how it came out.
In the airline business, any out of town hotel stay is a "layover," so the term has seen more than its share of use.

If things would work out that way I'd like it, too. :D
Unfortunately, the road is mostly a lonely place.

I travel on business all the time so I understand that. I am married though so no hanky panky allowed. I do have great customers that I travel to see and many of them have become friends which makes it lots nicer.

in a cowboy hat; cowboy boots; blue jeans; and a button down, long sleave shirt with squigglies and sparklies. A few beers and we'll have you on that mechanical bull in no time. :)

10. A question about rates |
|
Tobin - I have absolutely no intention of becoming a truck driver, but I am curious about something. I often see advertisements on trucks for companies wanting drivers and they often mention $0.42/hour. Can a driver make a living on that?
Thanks

12. That's fair pay for a company driver |
|
Edited on Wed Sep-08-10 01:58 PM by Tobin S.
That translates into about $60,000 a year if you want to work and your company has the freight.
The $1.40 a mile figure I mentioned in the OP is a decent rate (in the current economy, anyway) for someone who owns his/her own truck and hauls dry vans, the big box style of trailer without a refrigerated unit. I've been keeping about 50 cents a mile of that so far and putting it into my pocket, but I've had a lot of maintence issues. When the truck is running well it's closer to 65 cents a mile.

You're in for some nasty weather. Keep the rubber side down, Tobin, and watch yourself going through the Couv.
