[Bertha Venation]

This was the most transcendent, moving, humbling experience of my life. I cried throughout; I couldn't speak my vows to my beloved, I could only whisper them. After ten years together, we are wed, and I am over the moon.

We married in Oregon in 2004 during a brief window when Multnomah County issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Our marriage (and many others) was later nullified by the state of Oregon. Listen, when Gavin Newsom opened up City Hall for Marriage Equality, it was near Valentine's day 2004. The lines were immediately wrapped around the block 3 times over, so my friends and I baked cookies and brewed a big thermos of coffee to hand out while everyone waited. The stories we heard! So many people just wanting a valid commitment, and to show how proud they were to be with the one they loved. Only the hardest heart would stay cold against such an outpouring!

The greatest desire of humans is to love, to belong, to matter to someone else. We search our whole lives to find it, and many of us never get there. But the obstacles my gay friends have conquered just to find their soulmates--well, I'm amazed at your courage and determination. Happy trails to both of you, and I hope you have many happy years together.

And BTW, now the kitty cats can mellow out too, right???
