Oprah Gives Australia Trip To ENTIRE Audience

CHICAGO — They shrieked, they gasped, they cried, they hugged – and that was before Oprah Winfrey's studio audience got a trip to Australia. Winfrey kicked off her 25th and final season of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on Monday with promised surprises. After teasing the 300 audience members with a suggestion she might take them on a trip to New York, Philadelphia or Los Angeles, she said her last season merited something "bigger."

"So I started to think about where would I most want to go," she said over the din of an audience that suddenly understood they were going somewhere far away.

"Maybe I should take you all with me to the other side of the world. We're going to Australia," Winfrey shouted.

With that, a mock-up of a Quantas Air Lines jet rolled onto stage, its door opened and actor John Travolta, who also flies airplanes, stepped out dressed as a Quantas pilot.

1. I'm sorry, I don't think that's hate-worthy.
She's run out of things to do, maybe, but she's not worthy of hate.

9. I looked it up--he's their "Ambassador at Large"
Apparently, he bought one of their 707s & entered into a deal with Qantas to use their livery & aircraft paint job from the 1960's.

quote: As "Ambassador-at-Large" Mr. Travolta has become a Qantas employee and will, during the global tour, spend time with fellow Qantas employees in each market. Mr. Travolta purchased the ex-Qantas 707 four years ago and has been an enthusiastic aviator since his childhood.

So he's a Qantas employee & part-time pilot, which is why he was touting Qantas on Oprah's show. So glad he's got a day job, just in case the acting thing doesn't work out for him. ;)

11. I saw somewhere on the internet that
he will be flying the plane to Australia.

Betcha they got a "First Officer" who has four stripes and more hours than Travolta on board as well.

He is qualified in jets though and owns a couple.

But flying passengers? Eh, give me Sullenberger.

14. He's flown other "goodwill missions" including the UK team to the World Cup
yeah, they probably have someone with more experience in the cockpit with him, but if he wasn't qualified to fly a 707, they wouldn't let him use their livery. :) I think it's pretty cool, actually.

but they only flew Oz domestic routes & folded several years ago. :( One of these years, I'll fly to Oz on Qantas.

5. no ideas + way too much money
Like who cares if she buys all these people a trip to Australia, and how does this make an interesting show? I don't really get it. I've never understood being excited about other people winning prizes. Plus, don't they have to pay taxes on this, like the people who won the cars did? At least those people coudl sell the car if they didn't want it to pay for the taxes and still made thousands of dollars, but I doubt that applies here.

The funny thing, is that even if she had told them they just won a free Josh Groban CD they all probably still would have shrieked just as loud as when she said they were going to Australia. It's really lame, on any talk show nowadays, how they give away the cd or movie or dvd or whatever to all the audience members, when only 5 of them are ever going to listen to it.

7. ROFL! That's an instant classic line!
I plan to use it myself.

What a great t-shirt that would make.

10. So, if you were in the audience, you'd turn down the trip?
I find the giveaway screaming and such kind of creepy, but heck, she's just giving away stuff, and I can't find anything inherently terrible about that. Besides, I hear Australia's beaches are just filled with sharks for that show to jump.

12. What's to hate?
She's very rich and gives stuff away to people. Maybe not what you would give them, but that's her choice. I've seen other threads complaining she doesn't give enough away. It's ridiculous.

13. To quote Jon Stewart:
"See: Here's where Oprah has violated the talk show hosts' code: treating the audience like shit. She gives away free cars and you guys stand out in the freezing cold weather for this piece of shit show? A bunch of random one-liners followed by some interview where I pretend to be remotely interested? We have a green room backstage with some great snacks, a big screen TV, video games, booze... do we let our audience use it? No."
