I found out a friend I haven't talked to in a few years needs a heart transplant

and I'm gonna go see him at home sometime this weekend. When I talked to him on the phone today, he didn't even sound sick.

He's not bedridden, but is on all kinds of drugs and stays close to home.
He's on the heart list...he's waiting on a heart. He says he doesn't sleep very well.
His mother is not taking it well, he said. He's living with his parents now.

Makes me really sad. He's in his 40's and just found out he has a genetic heart problem.


The weird thing is is about 12 years ago he was in a motorcycle wreck that should have killed him. It was bad. I saw what he looked like in that hospital bed.
The only reason he survived is that a policeman was behind him when someone else clipped him on his bike as they changed lanes. Kept him from bleeding to death. Really.

I told him he needs to get better because I need some head shots. He's a very talented photographer.

Parallels. 30 years ago, I was in a motorcycle accident where I really
should have died (waiting at a stoplight and hit from behind by a drunk
in a station wagon doing 55 MPH who didn't see me when he decided to
blow the light).

Now (unrelated), I have SERIOUS heart issues.
.
.
I'm working hard in order to keep going and stay as healthy as possible
in doing so but I'm comfortable with the fact that, despite what I do,
I will certainly die, not tomorrow or even next year (well -- PROBABLY
not), but much sooner than I would have anticipated a coupla years ago.

Since that accident 3 decades ago, I've always felt like I'm living on
bonus time... GIFT time. Thirty years of it.

Life has been very, VERY good to me.
