Mad Men is creeping me out this season
I'm no Don Draper, but the Betty-Sally relationship is a
carbon copy of my daughter's relationship with her mother.

Or maybe I'm projecting.

1. I wonder if Sally is being sexually abused.
Everything about her behavior this season, and especially last night, seems to suggest it.

2. Again, in my case there may be projection involved...

But she's showing all the same symptoms at age 10 that my daughter showed at age 11 when her controlling mother essentially kicked her out of the house. My kid had been hinting for a couple of years before then that she wanted to live with me instead. There wasn't sexual abuse going on--in my experience that tends to produce more shame-based and self-repressed behavior. But as with Sally, there was certainly strong verbal abuse coupled with tight social control and mental manipulation of the child by the mother, who imagined all sorts of depravities going on in the other household. And as a result, the child rebelled and grew increasingly hostile to authority figures until she got her way. Of course, a single dad raising daughter was certainly more viable in the 90s compared to the 60s.

Now, I want to stress the analogy's not perfect between Don and me. I was in market research, not marketing.

Seriously, the parallels are creepily on-target.

3. Well, I think we can both agree that something is really wrong in
the Francis household, anyway. And I'm really sorry that your daughter went through what she did. That's a hard thing for a kid to manage.

4. I know what you mean ... it is creepy perfect this season
I can relate to a lot of the characters on there. They all have a resemblance to someone in my past and the wardrobe and dialog are spot on
