I have one of the last of the non intel G5 iMacs. |
|
I stopped using it when the DVD Drive died on me, and I bought my Compaq laptop. It's just sitting on my desk collecting dust.
I guess I could buy a new drive for it and try to replace it myself, but I wouldn't even know how to removve the case.

3. Does it still have the back that comes completely off? |

I have one of the first-generation iMac G5s and the entire back of mine is easily removable, which made swapping out the DVD drive that was in it a snap. (I put in a drive that would burn double-layer DVDs.) I got the drive from macsales.com.
Be aware that in addition to a Philips-head screwdriver to loosen the captive screws at the bottom edge of the iMac and to remove the drive and its sled, you'll need a really small allen wrench to detach the drive from the sled once you get it out of the machine, but some places include that with the drive.
Good luck (not that you'll need it)! :)
Edit: Yep, yours is like mine, so it should be pretty easy.
