It's late 2010. Can we PLEASE stop posting "Dial-Up Warning?" |
|
This was necessary when posting something very pic-heavy 10 years ago. But now? Come on, let's put an end to this.

1. There are areas of the country where dial-up is the only thing available. Even in 2010. |
|
My sister lives in Olympia, WA and can only get dial-up at her house unless they want to pay thousands and thousands of dollars to get a cable brought down the road. My niece complains about it every time I see her.

Sorry, didn't know about this. So when will it be available for cheap everywhere in the country? 2015?

4. Who knows. Maybe longer. I doubt the phone/cable company is in much of hurry to |
|
provide service to a few houses down long country roads. And unless you've got a home-based business, who's going to shell out thousands to have the necessarily cables brought from the main road to your house?

|
Time Warner isn't willing to run the line. The pole is across the road but because I'm set back on 4 acres, I'm 50ft too far, even if they were inclined to run the line. TW engineering told me no, they won't do it and don't plan to.

23. Very serious. We live in a rural area and would be unable to move to several nearby towns because |
|
they have no dial-up, something that is crucial to my husband's job.

|
Edited on Wed Sep-22-10 06:37 PM by OmahaBlueDog
In Kansas and southern Nebraska, you can get an antenna (kinda like a satellite dish for DirecTV) that receives broadband broadcast off of cell towers.

35. You can, but hubby doesn't care for it. The speed is still too limited, it's more |
|
expensive than cable broadband, and you need to live within line of sight of the tower. There are also download limits which would impede him in his work. (He's a computer fix-it guy and needs to download programs and patches all the time.)

Edited on Wed Sep-22-10 12:45 PM by lizziegrace
It's a step above dial-up as far as speed, but not by much.
Also, with mobile broadband, there's usually a 5gb/month limit. If I'm getting close to the limit for the month, I want to avoid threads and sites that are going to chew threw my available usage.

2. There are a number of DU'ers that still have dial up. |
|
Some people live too far from a cable relay station, and believe it or not, there are still some places where DSL is still not available. That is why I will continue to post "Dial-Up Warnings" for them.

Not everyone lives in a major metropolitan area, as your profile says you do.
There are still many largely remote areas of this country. Really. Even in 2010.

|
and I think it's only because I live near a small elementary school. I doubt that most people in this town (and many others around here) have it... I still don't own a cell phone because I can't get a signal. My daughter goes into cell phone DT's whenever she comes back home for a visit. :-)
I'm sure there are still quite a few people on dial up.

I already stated I didn't know. I am oblivious living in a major city. I honestly thought no one has dial-up anymore. One day though, it won't be necessary to post "Dial-up warning." That day may be 2015 or even 2020, but that day will come.

17. It was suppose to be a goal of this administration |
|
They wanted some internet equivalent of the "rural electrification" programs of the '30s. Hasn't really gone anywhere, and is facing some tough opposition from the cable and phone companies. But as you are learning, we are a decade or more away from it, unless something really outstanding happens.
Heck, Verizon made an advertising campaign out of how poorly covered the US is in terms of 3G. It was a tad decitful because it was a geography map, not a population map. But none the less, practically whole states had no 3G service.
I think some of the resistence is that soon, land based service may be the "dial up" of the past and it will be a wireless basis that a large majority of people use for connection.

24. Ummm, lots of people are still on dial-up access...sometimes, it is |
|
an issue of affordability. Do you know what Comcast charges for their shitty services? More, and you don't get a hell of a lot more for what they charge you.
Doesn't bother me one bit, and I have a service from Comcast that is pretty much the same as any dial-up service performance-wise that constantly crashes on me!

I finally was able to get rid of mine only 2 years ago. And there are still plenty of places in the US where dial-up is the only option and it's still the only option for those people that can't afford anything better.
