I hate doctors/surgeons who think they are GOD. |

Today he decided that we need to fire the evening cleaning crew because his "personal" trashcan was not emptied in his suite. :eyes:
Never mind that we have 12 procedures scheduled today. GRRRRR.

2. I'm pretty sure they hand that attitude out in residency |
|
before then they seem ok. Something changes post residency. I have several MDs in my client base, and they REALLY hate that they don't understand everything, as a proper diety should. When they ask me to meet them at their office, that's a warning sign that they are quite insecure about relinquishing any aspect of control.

I love my Mayo doctor. He's a really easy person to talk to. And I LOVE talking the science of my disease. Not once has he ever shown a hint of anything but sincere interest in my health. And if their is anyone with a reason to be arrogant its the brilliant docs at Mayo who are the best in the WORLD at what they do.

3. Assholery is a required skill for psychiatrists. |
|
Of course, some of them fail miserably at it and are perfectly nice, pleasant people. The ones who are successful at it make me want to slap them upside the head.

I'm not a psychiatrist, just a lowly therapist, but I know so many fine psychiatrists who throw everything they've got behind people whose illnesses and difficulties lead them to do terrible and terrifying things, who give up personal time to answer crisis calls, who fight insurance companies who will do ANYTHING to avoid paying them. They attend conferences on different treatment modalities on their weekends, research and write papers to try to shed light on mental conditions about which we know so little that they are often sharing the patient's horror and pain and the onus of not being able to make it better. They love their patients in the sad way that only an imperfect helper can, and celebrate with them when things get better.
Yes, there are assholes. There are people who enter the profession seeking their own cure. There are incompetents, pill-pushers, and narcissists. But I know so many more who care. Same goes for surgeons. I know a lot of those too; my father in law and brother in law are two. They have saved countless, countless lives. If they didn't believe they were God just a little bit, they'd never be stupid enough to put themselves on the line for any human being who needs them.
I'm truly sorry if you've had bad experiences, but I've had amazing ones as well, and hate to see the good ones disrespected.

12. You did notice, I hope, that I acknowledged there are perfectly nice, pleasant |
|
people among them? (Psychiatrists; I said nothing about surgeons one way or the other.) After thirty years as a psychiatric social worker in three states, I must also acknowledge that I have seen appalling instances of arrogance and outright abuse directed from SOME psychiatrists toward nurses, therapists and case managers. Perhaps we are talking at cross-purposes here. We are in agreement that there are both decent human beings and assholes among the psychiatric profession. Maybe we just disagree on the relative proportions of each.

Not all of them do, but it totally comes out of left field sometimes. I worked with an OB once who had back-to-back deliveries in adjoining rooms. Made him SO MAD that he took the umbilical cord after it was clamped and cut, before the placenta delivered, and sprayed blood all over the TV hanging over the bed, ranting and raving at the same time. He yelled at techs, nurses, sometimes patients. I reported him lots of times, and one of the women who worked with me reported him for the stack of Playboys he had under his desk, right before an inspection.
I was so glad to see him leave the military. Tension level went way down that day.
I hope it gets easier for you. It can sure mess up a good day when someone with some authority has a bad day.
Edit for spelling.
