3. An old Indian chief was feeling poorly
So he went to see the medicine man. After a thorough examination, followed by treatments with various herbs and incantations, the medicine man determined that the chief suffered from elk bane. Taking an elk hide, he cut a long strap, and told the chief that he should cut off about an inch or two each day, and eat it. When he had eaten the entire strap, his illness would be cured.

Two weeks later, the medicine man checked back with the chief to see how he was doing. The chief said that very morning he had consumed the last of the elk hide strap. The medicine man asked how he was feeling, and the chief said,

"The thong is ended, but the malady lingers on."

Excuse me, I have to flee for my life now.
