How long does it legally take to change your name?

I need to get a passport, and I either need to come up with umpteen forms of ID or I need to change my name.

I don't have umpteen forms of ID.

2. I signed a form to have my driver's licence in the name I use (not my birth name)

Same thing to have it changed on my Social Security paperwork but that was in the 80s (DL in the 90s).
