Dick's Sporting Goods refuses to stock, sell Michael Vick merchandise...
Even though Vick is - as of Wednesday - the Eagles starting QB, Dick's says they will not stock or sell his jersey or any team merchandise or other merchandise with his name on it due to his participation in dog fighting.

This from Philly Channel 6 News Thursday AM.

13. I despise guns
If you like target shooting, leave your gun at the range.
No need for the gun otherwise.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people, but people with knives or fists have a hell of a lot harder time doing it.

34. Look Who's Talking.

Some people don't like guns or the things certain people do with them or the right-wing politics that constantly accompany the gun rights movement in this country. And you obviously despise such people.

Good on Dick's regarding Michael Vick, by the way. They just earned more of my future business.......

Purpose of guns, other than target or skeet shooting, is to harm or kill sentient beings.
Really, really poor analogy on your part.

32. I agree
They get people to and from the bar, drive by shootings or just plain using it as a deadly weapon.

More people will probably be killed by drunk or distracted drivers than with guns this year in the US. Your self-righteousness is very selective.

42. I would say that most people want a gun for protection.
That would be a purpose. Whether or not it is used to hurt or kill someone can be a different deal. It can be a deterrent. Gun in your face, you may decide to flee. Just saying. There are lots of people out there who've been abused, raped, burglarized, etc., and sleep easier at night with a gun. You don't have to like that, but guns serve a purpose of protection. I don't own one by the way.

51. My family is alive and unharmed due to a gun being in the house
Had a home invasion 19 years ago. The kids were just babies back then. Somebody yanked our ac window unit out and was crawling into the window by the time the noise had waken us up and I had the gun. The guy already had one leg in the window and on the floor when I yelled "I have a gun MF'er!", his reply, "FU!", I fired a shot above his head and hit the kitchen cabinets, he was all the way inside by that time but did an Olympic dive back out the window and was gone.

So no regrets and a big FU to whoever doesn't like it. The cops never caught the guy to my knowledge unless he got busted down the road. The landlord didn't even charge me or take the damages out of my deposit when I moved either.

60. Besides hunters and just plain ole thugs, I think most people
have a gun for that very reason. I rely on my dogs. But I also have my husband and home. Not sure what he can do, but I do feel safer with someone else there. If I were alone, I am almost certain I'd have a gun. That's just me.

My aunt's house has been broken into 3 different times. One of those times, she was duct taped (hands, feet, and over her eyes), knife held to her throat, and fondled. She got a gun soon after. He was never caught (at least to our knowledge), but she sleeps at night because of the gun she purchased. She actually pulled it out last week. Someone was tapping on her window. She asked "who's there?". No answer. More tapping. 3 different times this happened. She got the gun. Her dogs were going crazy. She called the cops. They came. The neighbor actually saw the random vehicle there. Her car was just broken into a couple of months ago. Her purse, license, everything was stolen, so some thug has her address. And since it was a Prada purse with lots of cash and credit cards, well who's to say they didn't want to see what she had in her house. She was able to rest somewhat better that night knowing she had that gun. She also has pretty shitty luck if you can tell.

I have no problem with responsible people owning guns. The responsible part is the hard part. I don't trust guns. I don't trust myself with a gun, but who the hell am I to tell someone that they can't rest easy at night?

4. The two sides of the Vick coin
1). Yes, he paid the debt to society that was mandated by the courts

2). The world owes Vick nothing. I have never tortured animals and the world owes me nothing. No one is under any obligation to do anything for Vick. If he plays pro ball, his team is obligated to pay him. But if Dick's Sporting Goods doesn't want to sell Vick merchandise, that is their decision.

Whether Vick should be "forgiven"...and as a result, his past transgressions "forgotten"...is another matter.

Can you rehabilitate a monster? Maybe. What do you end up with?

A rehabilitated monster.

Perhaps he doesn't need to turn into Albert Schweitzer, or a spokesperson for PETA/ASPCA...but some sort of convincing remorse and atonement would seem to be a minimum requirement?

While it's true he completed his sentence, American jails are not great in the rehabilitation area.

Knowing the violence and heartlessness he is capable of, I wouldn't want him anywhere around me.

He will always be scum. Scum who had everything. Didn't need any money. He wasn't in a desperate situation. Maybe I'd be more willing to forgive someone so desperate. But not someone who had it all. Or still HAS it all. No can do. Is that right? I don't know and I don't care. I am usually a very very forgiving person. But he's out of jail. Still making money. He's fine. Good on Dick's for taking a stand.

Edited on Thu Sep-23-10 08:44 AM by Blue_Tires
They would have to stop selling about half of their jerseys in all sports, since quite a few others are druggies, woman beaters, drunk drivers, gamblers, absentee fathers, tax cheats or just general jackasses...

And to be consistent, will Dick's refuse to stock merchandise of teams whose OWNERS have come under legal or ethical scrutiny??

If they really wanted to make some kind of social statement with impact, Dick's would stop selling Nike gear or shoddy China-made crap -- But then the store would be empty... So they get to make news by NOT putting the five or ten Vick jerseys on a rack...

43. Not really. Stallworth actually demanded he be convicted of a felony.
"Over and over, members of Stallworth’s elite team of attorneys shouted at him to fight the charges. They said there was no way to prove who was at fault. Reyes, after all, dashed across a busy freeway to catch a bus near a green light that rarely turns red. There was other evidence, never released to the public, Boucher said, that the lawyers wanted to give that would aid Stallworth’s case. Still he said no.

“The irony,” said one of Stallworth’s attorneys, David Cornwell, “is that a lot of the media and public was angry with the deal that he took. And the thing they wanted, for him to go to trial, was the thing he was trying to avoid for the family.”"

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=lc-stallworthsecondchance081210

His conviction was 30 days in prison, 1000 hours community service, two years house arrest (like in Disturbia, he can only leave for his job), another eight years on probation, and a lifetime ban on him driving again. The pedestrian was clearly at fault. He was running across a street outside a crosswalk in the dark to catch a bus. Supposedly a nearby camera even captured it, and the man's family agreed it was his fault.

Stallworth knew he would win any trial, and probably get no conviction at all, but he refused to fight it. He said he deserved to be convicted of a felony and because it was his fault he didn't want the family to have to go through a trial (he probably knew the trial would prolong his publicity, too, so it may not have been all altruism). Also, he was worried that if he didn't get a felony conviction his reputation would be even further damaged.

Pretty decent guy, all things considered. Not saying he didn't deserve more time. But I'd invite him to dinner over Roethlisberger or Pacman any day.

All we're doing is deciding who to hate and who not to hate. Justice has already had its crack at both people. I'm just saying if I'm going to hate someone, it's going to be Roethlisberger, and if someone hates Vick and not Roethlisberger (who I hate right now for having such a damned long name), I question their priorities.
