or rather how do I tell what tranny I have? what is "C6" or "ADD"? those take dexron 11 series D
all others take F

1. The red shit.
It is probably a C6 and pretty much any Dexron will do in the short term. Take it in for a full fluid and filter change.

2. heh not a vehicle worth taking in
and I probably finally killed it off this time - will see (not even sure that is the problem although it has been having some shift "issues" of late

right now it is sitting dead on the interstate about 2 miles away. I may do a post about it in a while - after I take a little nap.

thanks - I think all we have is some Chrysler stuff, let me go look - ATF 4 - wrong stuff huh?

3. In a Ford, it won't matter. They'll run fine on bacon grease. An F-150 can live through anything.
And yes, it is worth saving. You can't replace it with anything better. They don't make things like that anymore. I've got a '68 Galaxie fastback with a 390. The planet will never see another car that cool again.

4. it HAS been impressive
its got a 460 in it and it is what I (have been?) use to pull the stock trailer. It was sitting up at the end of our road RUNNING after the border patrol scattered it's driver and passengers into the hills. It has had some other adventures since then, and has continued to be and take serious abuse. we shall see, it may be fine.

5. Wow. A 460 is a hell of an engine! Keep that fucker running!
And a C6 is a rather common and inexpensive transmission, so if you blow it up it won't be that expensive to replace.

9. yeah that is engineerese and the fact that men can't design anything simple and consistant
this son of a gun has two tanks - almost $100 to fill it - and was over that much last year, but we don't actually use it all that much - emergencies like yesterday or pulling the trailer

years ago I took a load of people to Mexico in it. That was an adventure. The driveline went out on a steep, curvy mountain road just before dark. yee haw!

7. If it is a 3 speed auto, it is a C6.
What does C6 mean? 1966. When Ford modernized it's part numbering system in the 1950s they assigned a letter code for the years. B for the decade 1950, C for 1960, D for the seventies and so on. The C6 was introduced in 1966. The smaller C4 was introduced in 1964.

Anyways, the C6 takes type F. Type F has less friction modifier additives. Adding type F to a GM TH350 will usually result in harsher shifts. Putting Dexron into a C6 might lead to softer shifts. This might be an issue if the trans is old as it might lead to more slippage and faster wear of old clutches. It might not do anything.

If it's an overdrive automatic, use Mercon (developed by Ford) or Dexron (GM).

8. I bought F and put a pint into the van.
pretty embarrassing what it looked like in there, the tranny must be going - but that seemed to help

but here is the thing - my Haynes said Dexron 11 Series D for the C6 and the freaking bottle of fluid (F) said pre 1977 and some 78 to 80 Fords...

10. OK, they phased F out.
But 1 pint of anything will not be a problem. F just has less slippery additives than others. Gets confusing with all the new types replacing old types and when.

The old van getting up in the mileage?

12. well I bought 4 quarts thinking we might change it out but I didn't get a filter
(since I have no clue what to get - will probably wait until we have the truck handy to go get the new version of whatever comes out of the van!)

I have no idea of the mileage, the odometer/speedometer have never worked, but I'm sure it is up there - the thing was originally a shuttle van that ran between Nogales and Phoenix, then it somehow got into the hands of smugglers, so its history is a bit...???

11. K - you might want to spend a few bucks and do some maintenance on it
rather than just run it till the next disaster. It could be a nice ol' van with a little love, ya know?

14. yeah I have been thinking that
it needs a lot, though - may need a tranny (I did put one in already), radiator, welding for the muffler, airconditioning is shot, weather stripping is shot, back of the roof leaks (not that big of a deal) tires are a fortune and gas mileage sucks big time

and the damn cows have chewed up the rear wiring AGAIN! (no big deal just a hassle untangling it and matching all the previous patches to my tow lights)

I've done two drivelines, brakes, steering box, water pump, a tranny, fuel pump, rear and trailer lights (lost count of how many times)

but it IS a nice strong truck for sure!

16. We just spent some bucks this summer having a lot of work done
on our 10 year old Santa Fe - It's like new except for the paint, runs and handles great. We need it for the coming winter - I'm at the age where what used to be adventures are now just a pain in the ass..

13. Take one Prius, wring out its vital juices, and strain them through an
old coffee filter. Pour the strained Prius juice into the tranny. Reserve any leftovers for future use ....
