You never notice the wind when it is at your back.
I just got back from riding my bicycle. I'm not very athletic, I have a cheap Target bike, and I ride it poorly. But it's fun. Anyway, the wind was blowing right in my face today while I was trying to pull a hill. You wouldn't think the wind would make much difference, but damn - it was making me have to push like hell just to move a few meters. That really got me thinking. I was born into a middle class family. I'm white, male, Chrisitan, and heterosexual. Most of my life, the wind has been at my back and I didn't notice it. I thought I was just that good. Pedalling was easy, and my bike flew like the wind. Now, I've entered a time in my life when the wind is blowing right in my face. It happens to us all, but some are born into it.
To my credit, I realized that the right-wing message of everybody deserving their lot in life was bullshit in my early 20's. But I never really realized how hard it is to pedal with the wind in your face until this year.
Really, I'm still a privileged man. I still don't completely understand. But I'm learning.

when the SF Giants were playing in Chicago, they kept hitting balls out of the park, and I thought: "Wow! They are really, really playing well tonight!" (which they were).
Then I heard the commentators say that the winds were like 35mph. Suddenly I knew why the balls were flying over the fence.
I know, I know, this thread isn't really about wind, but it reminded me of that game.
Giants won it like 13 to 1 or something.
